Supplement designed to support healthy digestion and colon health. Rich in short-chain fatty acids and fiber.

To promote a more balanced digestive system, Dr. Peter D'Adamo, author of Eat Right 4 Your Type, blended three critical dietary nutrients (butyric acid, caprylic acid, larch arabinogalactan) to create Intrinsa, a truly revolutionary formula that is a key to optimal gut restoration.

Many are aware of the benefits of certain fats (such as the omega-3 fatty acids). Less known is the importance of what scientists call the short chain fatty acids (SCFAs). Unlike most fats which are very long chains of hydrocarbons, SCFAs are much smaller, often only having three or four hydrocarbons. Because of their small size SCFAs are easily made by bacteria as part of their own life cycle. An unbalanced gut (dysbiosis) will often result in a shortage of SCFAs.

Let's take a look at the Intrinsa formula how it all works together:

Ingredient Action
Butyric acid This short-chain fatty acid supports the health of the lining of the intestines, and serves the natural processes of aerobic energy metabolism. Our gut bacteria make butyric acid from the fiber in our diet. Studies have shown that butyric acid helps maintain the integrity of the gut barrier. The conversion of dietary fiber to butyrate is key to why high-fiber diets are so healthy.
Caprylic acid This medium-chain fatty acid is absorbed from the intestines and carried by blood lipids. Caprylic acid is a source of energy for the gut bacteria and can help keep levels of yeast in the gut under proper control.
Larch Arabinogalactan This form of soluble fiber increases gut 'good bacteria,' e.g. Lactobacillus, increases overall short-chain fatty acid production and helps the digestive tract remove metabolic leftovers, such as ammonia.

The Symbiotic Cycle

Just like any ecosystem, one cannot simply change one element in the gut and expect it to produce an effect on the entire system. Rather, just like a garden, the gut must be tended. In disrupted situations (known as dysbiosis) adding a butyrate supplement may be necessary to 'prime the pump,' allowing the de-energized gut lining an opportunity to rebuild and regenerate. In situations like this, Intrinsa can help to get the 'motor to turn over' and give the system a chance to rebalance itself naturally.

Dr. Peter D'Adamo:

"Besides probiotics, three other variables are involved in digestive wellness: Diet, fiber intake, and the availability of short chain fatty acids in your gut. When all these factors are all in balance, your 'symbiotic cycle' is in place, and ready to provide years of trouble-free service."

Dr. Peter D'Adamo:

"Dietary fiber, by definition, cannot be digested and broken down by the body (which is why it is fiber.) On the other hand, bacteria in the colon can breakdown the fiber that we consume into simpler carbohydrates, and one of the results is butyric acid. Butyric acid is an amazingly odd-smelling substance: a combination of parmesan cheese and gym socks. But don't let the smell disuade you from using the product: It will leave your gut smelling like roses after a spring rain."
