A Resolution-Free Year

Autumnal Changes

Each year, as December comes to a close and I prepare for the new year, I try to pay special attention to completing outstanding projects, finish up any "unfinished" business, and put my physical space in order so I can welcome in the new year.

I also set goals and resolutions for the upcoming year with all good and full intentions of keeping them.  Some I do; some I don't.  As I talk to friends, clients and associates, I hear a lot of groaning about resolutions, and the overall consensus is that everyone wants them, but no one wants to feel defeat when they don't keep them.

I thought I would try something new this upcoming year.  Rather than a list of resolutions, goals, aspirations, I am going to work on letting go…surrendering into the new year and whatever comes with it.  Now, don't get me wrong.  This doesn't mean that I am giving up or that I don't care; quite the contrary.  I care very deeply and I am very committed to my continuing self-improvement in all areas of my life—personal/professional, body, mind and soul. 

My commitment is to live each day in the moment; to maintain my integrity in words and deeds; to cultivate joy and laughter in my life so that lightness of spirit becomes a companion, a dear friend who'll be with me in all the ups and downs that life will bring to me this year.

I recently took a yoga class, and the teacher said "surrender into the pose."  Easier said than done for me, as I struggle to regain my flexibility after a year of limited movement due to a slower than expected recovery from foot surgery.  As I tried to calm my breathing and stop struggling to stay in the pose, the teacher said something that resonated very deeply with me.  To paraphrase her, she said that we often times struggle with surrender.  We make it feel like work, as if there's a big effort to surrender, and really it is just letting go.  She said, rather than refer to surrender, we might reframe it as "calmly abiding."  I loved that phrase, as it allows me to shift the idea of working to surrender to listening and embracing the natural flow of my life.

We can surrender into health and wellness, embracing our unique individuality and uniqueness.  Rather than grumbling and groaning about how much work it is, what we need to give up, why we can't have something, we can "calmly abide" as we eat right for your types, support our bodies with healthy movement, and allow time for rest and relaxation.

Keeping Kids Active In Winter

Pediatricians recommend that children get 60 minutes of physical activity every day, but keeping kids active during the cold, dark days of winter can be a challenge. One way to make sure your kids are getting enough exercise is to incorporate physical activity into their daily routine. As long as children are properly dressed, getting outdoors to play should not be difficult or uncomfortable – here are a few of our favorite winter activities:

Autumnal Changes

Take a winter hike.  Explore rock formations, frozen streams, and leafless trees and note how different they look in the winter. 

Autumnal Changes Play in the snow.  Build a snow man (or woman!) or create an entirely new type of snow sculpture. Gather friends, build a snow fort, and engage in a rollicking snowball fight.
Autumnal Changes Have a game of snow football or snow soccer.  Create a space and try running and kicking in the snow – it's not as easy as it looks!
Autumnal Changes Go ice skating! Strap on your skates and head to the local rink.  Gliding on ice builds muscles and really gets your heart pumping.
Autumnal Changes For those days when it's too cold to play outside, investigate local indoor play spaces and recreation facilities – many may have structured gymnastics, sports teams, or classes aimed at building skills for spring sports. 
Keeping your children active not only keeps their bodies healthy,
but also promotes self-esteem and a positive attitude.

Hearty Slow-Cooker Turkey Stew

Blustery weather calls for comfort food…and supper is even more comforting when there's very little work involved! Our one-pot Slow-Cooker Turkey Stew* combines flavorful turkey breast with nourishing veggies and fragrant herbs, and best of all, it's right for all blood types so everyone can dig in!

Ingredients:

  • 2 teaspoons olive oil
  • 1 pound turkey breast
  • 2 cups diced onion
  • 2 cups diced parsnips
  • 2 large sprigs fresh rosemary
  • 4 large sprigs fresh thyme
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup right for your type stock (veggie, beef, chicken)
  • 4 cups kale - ribs removed and torn

Directions:

  • Preheat slow cooker to medium
  • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat, and sear turkey breast on all sides. Remove from heat and set aside.
  • In the same skillet, add onion and parsnips, and sauté 3-4 minutes. Remove from skillet and place in bottom of slow cooker with rosemary and thyme, placing turkey breast on top of vegetables and herbs.
  • Add water and stock to skillet used to sear turkey and increase heat to medium-high to deglaze, scraping up all the bits. Pour liquid and bits over turkey in the slow cooker.
  • Cover and cook 1 hour. Add the kale and cook 1 additional hour.
