Lectins
Peter D'Adamo, ND

We now know that immune reactions to inflammatory proteins found in many common foods in the diet are often caused by lectins, and in many of these reactions exactly who goes on to be impacted is often predictable by that person’s blood type.

William Boyd appears to be one of those fascinating people who goes on to dominate an entire area of research for a generation. In addition to some great science fiction, he wrote an important work with Isaac Asimov (Races and People) using his work with blood types to demolish the racist notions commonly believed in this country during the 1950's. But Dr. Boyd accomplished much, much more than that. In the 1940’s he noticed that the protein agglutinin in lima beans would agglutinate red cells of human blood type A but not those of O or B; he had in fact discovered that many of these blood agglutinins were actually specific to one blood type or another. With Elizabeth Shapely he coined their modern-day name: lectins, which is Latin for “to pick or choose”.

We now know that immune reactions to inflammatory proteins found in many common foods in the diet are often caused by lectins, and in many of these reactions exactly who goes on to be impacted is often predictable by that person’s blood type.

I still remember that day back in the early 1980’s, sitting in a local diner eating breakfast, that I first read Nathan Sharon’s article in Scientific American and was first introduced the broader concept of lectins. We had learned about these interesting proteins as a student at Bastyr College, but only in a most cursory manner.

I had long been aware of the other differences between the blood types with regard to diseases and physiology --such as the greater risk of ulcers in type O and the lower levels of stomach acid often found in type A. But here was yet another new insight: Foods themselves could react with people in ways specific to their blood type. Once the future impact of this revelation hit me, I actually stood up almost by reflex, then meekly sat back down and continued to read.

Two decades later, and after Eat Right For Your Type was published, lectins became a common topic of discussion in nutrition circles. It seemed everybody was suddenly an expert and everyone had an opinion. I’ve read reviews where it was claimed that lectins don’t reach the circulation (they do); are digested before they can do damage (sometimes), can be destroyed by cooking (often true, but a few are actually activated by heating). Other folks thought the entire basis of the Blood Type Diet was lectins, which resulted in articles claiming that I had said that there were lectins in milk (there aren’t) or that every avoid food for each blood type was because there was a lectin in the food (nope, there are lots of reasons a food might be classified as an avoid).

Yet when we strip away the double-speak, baloney and confusion, what do we need to understand about these fascinating proteins? First thing is that they are neither ‘all good’ nor ‘all bad’. Wheat or corn lectin might aggravate your arthritis, but the lectin from the escargot snail and common mushroom may help prevent your from getting certain forms of cancer. That’s the importance and significance of ‘eating right for your type:’ any food is only good or bad in that particular person.

So, should you consider using lectin-based products from NAP? Well, if you have digestive problems (IBS, food allergies, microbial overgrowth), inflammation (arthritis, muscle ache, fibromyalgia) or are trying to maximize weight loss, perhaps a lectin-based formula might be just the thing for you.

Enjoy, and see you next issue! - Peter

Natural Products in Detail: Deflect
Natalie Colicci, ND

During the holidays, it’s easy to cheat on your diet. Support yourself with these wonderful formulations that promote proper digestion and food assimilation, and protect you from the side-effects of those pesky, inflammation-promoting lectins
Summer is over and as we progress through the Fall, many of us are looking forward to the holiday get-togethers. This time of year generates many questions about how to handle holiday meals and still stick to a healthy lifestyle and nutritional food plan. For some this isn’t an issue, but for others, it is always a challenge. This month’s newsletter focuses on some additional support as you face those “What can I eat?” moments!

If eating for your type is your way of life, then you are familiar with lectins. Lectins are sugar binding proteins. They are found in a variety of foods, and many of them are blood type specific. They are most widely distributed in plants and are particularly abundant in legumes and seafood. Like Velcro to a tennis ball, lectins can attach to the various cells in the body and then create a number of physiological actions such as promoting bad bacteria overgrowth and insulin resistance. By causing the release of histamine from our cells, lectins cause inflammation which plays a role in food related allergies as well as immune and bowel dysfunction. Lectins can directly trigger the immune system creating a cascade of inflammation such as seen in the diet sensitivities in Rheumatoid Arthritis patients. In one study, the edible parts of 29 of 88 foods tested, including common salad ingredients, fresh fruits, roasted nuts, and processed cereals were found to possess lectins which agglutinated, or clumped together, the blood cells of least one ABO group.

So when you are socializing at holiday parties, how do you avoid them? You could certainly provide your own meals, but this is neither always practical nor leaves a good impression in the mind of your host. Dr. D’Adamo has designed the Deflect products (Deflect A, Deflect AB, Deflect B, Deflect O) to provide additional support against lectins, which comes in handy during times like the holidays when it isn’t always so easy to make the better food choice. The Deflect products (Deflect A, Deflect AB, Deflect B, Deflect O) provide a level of anti-adhesive effects against dietary lectins. They provide a source of free “sacrificial” carbohydrates so lectins bind them instead of your cells.

When used with ARA Plus and Redoxa, you achieve even greater anti-lectin blocking support as well as the addition benefits of promoting the growth of beneficial gut bacteria and lung and liver detoxification support. Lectins are known to disrupt the digestive tract by contributing to an overgrowth of bad bacteria and contribute to leaky gut. ARA Plus contains arabinogalactan; a soluble dietary fiber that serves as a food supply for friendly bacteria and it increases the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFA's) which promote the health of the intestinal cells. Redoxa is the North American Pharmacal, Inc. solution to supporting a healthy respiratory system. As mentioned early, lectins can modulate the release of histamine. This is major problem for allergy and asthma suffers. Redoxa is designed to assist the respiratory system by enhancing healthy immune function, helping to rid the respiratory passages of bothersome mucous, and stimulate repair and healing. It also has a nice effect on the liver by serving as a source of N-acetyl cysteine (NAC). NAC is a precursor for glutathione; a potent antioxidant and used by the liver in detoxification.

During the holidays, it’s easy to cheat on your diet. Support yourself with these wonderful formulations that promote proper digestion and food assimilation, and protect you from the side-effects of those pesky, inflammation-promoting lectins.
Designed by Dr. Peter J. D’Adamo for specific use in his clinic, Deflect (Deflect A, Deflect AB, Deflect B, Deflect O) is a versatile supplement with many clinical applications. The staff physicians at the D’Adamo Clinic have used Deflect (Deflect A, Deflect AB, Deflect B, Deflect O) successfully in the treatment of the following clinical presentations:
  • Lectin Blocking and Removal
  • Metabolic Syndrome (Insulin Resistance and Pre-Diabetes)
  • Allergies
  • Asthma
  • Arthritis and Joint Pain
  • Bacterial and Yeast Overgrowth
  • Malabsorption and Bowel Disease
  • Liver Problems
  • Urinary Tract Infections and Cystitis
Deflect (Deflect A, Deflect AB, Deflect B, Deflect O) can be used in synergistically many of North American Pharmacal’s products. This month, North American Pharmacal, Inc. is offering you extra savings on additional synergistic products in order for everyone to explore the multitude of uses and benefits afforded by Deflect (Deflect A, Deflect AB, Deflect B, Deflect O) in conjunction with healthy diet and lifestyle.

When used with Detoxical-D and Hepatiguard, you have a triple packed punch to support liver detoxification. The liver is the blood’s primary cleaning machine. Any lectins floating in your circulation will pass through the liver as it filters the blood. Deflect provides a level of protection against adherence of lectins to liver tissue. Detoxical-D is a unique blend of calcium D-glucarate, and the botanical Phyllanthus. It supports liver detoxification of potentially dangerous environmental pollutants and toxins as well as excess steroid hormones such as estrogen. Hepatiguard also supports the detoxification capabilities of the liver, the regenerative properties of liver tissue, and provides it with a potent source of antioxidants.

In September’s newsletter we focused on the healthy joint formulas Phloxicin and Connectivar. Phloxicin is designed to help maintain joint health and flexibility using a combination of herbal ingredients and one amino acid, which have demonstrated to support joint function. Woven into the total formula, all of these synergistic ingredients help to support joint health and flexibility. Connectivar is designed to help maintain blood vessel, capillary, and ligament strength. Deflect (Deflect A, Deflect AB, Deflect B, Deflect O) plays a role in maintaining healthy joint function through its lectin blocking abilities. If you suffer from arthritis, I am sure you are aware of the relationship of diet and nutrition and the progression of the disease and symptoms. Lectins are a contributory component of diet related aggravation and inflammation associated with the disease. They have a specific effect of having the ability to provoke inflammation by directing triggering the immune system. The carbohydrates in Deflect (Deflect A, Deflect AB, Deflect B, Deflect O) also support the cartilage and joint fluid as well.

If you are looking for addition digestive support, incorporate Deflect (Deflect A, Deflect AB, Deflect B, Deflect O) with North American Pharmacal Inc.’s Gastro-D Complex andPolyflora (Polyflora A , Polyflora AB, Polyflora B, Polyflora O). Gastro-D Complex was designed to support healthy levels of stomach acid and digestion. It is comprised of synergistic ingredients, including Deglycerized Licorice (DGL) and Mastic Gum, which help to protect and heal the delicate lining of the stomach from acid; Safflower Tops help to provide additional support against H. Pylori infestation, especially for blood type O non-secretors; Bentonite Clay assists in attracting and soaking up environmental toxins; the inner bark rind of Slippery Elm protects the GI tract from excess acidity; and Bismuth helps protect the lining of the stomach from stomach acid. Polyflora (Polyflora A , Polyflora AB, Polyflora B, Polyflora O) is a probiotic designed with each individual blood type in mind. Friendly intestinal bacterium promotes healthy digestion by normalizing stool volume and frequency, decreasing food sensitivities and intestinal inflammation, and producing digestive enzymes. They also enhance the bioavailability of nutrients, vitamins and minerals.

Holiday Eating - A Survival Guide
Ann Quasarano

Although food can be a big part of the season, it doesn’t have to be the focus. Holidays bring family and friends together to celebrate traditions and give thanks.

For many people, holiday eating means abandoning diets and a typical three to five pound weight gain, not to mention the heartburn, upset stomach and digestive problems that precede the bulge. But with a little willpower and a bit of advance planning, you can stay on your path to good health and enjoy the holidays too!

First the good news, whether you’re on the GenoType Diet or the Blood Type Diet there’s one thing that everyone has in common…Turkey! Yes, the traditional holiday bird is listed as either a beneficial or a neutral for each of the blood types, regardless of secretor status, and all of the GenoTypes! Funny how we get excited about these little things. Now that bad news…sausage stuffing, candied sweet potatoes and whipped cream are not on anyone’s beneficial list. You can, however, survive the holidays and still eat well while staying on your prescribed diet, here’s how.

Are you doing the cooking? If you are, scroll through the recipes on www.dadamo.com or take a look at the Holiday Table article in this newsletter. You will find creative, blood type and GenoType friendly alternatives to the traditional holiday fare. If it’s compatible with your blood type, try substituting pureed cauliflower instead of mashed white potatoes, or roasted butternut squash instead of candied sweet potatoes. Your guests will be delighted by the fresh new tastes and the change from the customary menu.

It can be a bit tricky when you are a guest in someone else’s home. Offering to bring a side dish or salad is often a good place to start. You can prepare something that is in line with your diet and be helpful to your host at the same time. Eat something before you leave home so you don’t arrive hungry. One of the biggest diet-killers is the appetizer tray – chips, dips and those mini-hot dogs are chock full of calories and avoids; so do yourself a favor and stick to the veggie tray if you must have something to munch. At the dinner table, fill your plate with lots of right for your type vegetables, green salad and turkey, there won’t be any room for any of the “bad stuff.” Alcohol contains hundreds of empty calories, limit yourself to one glass of wine and drink lots of water. Dessert is always the most difficult – hopefully, your host will have a fruit basket or bowl of nuts, although, pumpkin or apple pie is much more tempting. If you are really craving dessert, ask for a small sliver of pie and forego the whipped topping.

Although food can be a big part of the season, it doesn’t have to be the focus. Holidays bring family and friends together to celebrate traditions and give thanks. They also bring lots of opportunities for eating and drinking and even the most disciplined people struggle with temptation. So don’t beat yourself up if you slip-up. Just make a plan to handle all those party landmines with your diet intact. If all else fails, bring along a bottle of Deflect!

Jacquelynne Featherly- "Teaching the Difference Between You and Me"

“Each patient is unique and has their own unique factors that determine their nutritional food plan and course of treatment. Being trained in the study of a person’s DNA and working with Dr. D’Adamo is a treasure and valuable asset to being able to help people every day. It takes dedication, but it’s my life’s work and I am determined to help as many as I can.”

Jacquelynne “Jackie” Featherly had a background in natural medicine long before she started following The Blood Type Diet. Jackie had been a homeopath for more than 25 years and had a thriving practice and was studying to be a Naturopathic physician. In 2000, at the age of 54, she was diagnosed with colon cancer. After consulting with physicians and undergoing a sigmoidoscopy, Jackie was informed that surgery would be necessary to remove a large tumor. As she is a practicing Jehova’s Witness and her religious beliefs prevented her from accepting blood, Jackie was forced to choose between shrinking the tumor with radiation or simply waiting. She decided to treat herself naturopathically, but 8 months later, the tumor began to grow. Unfortunately, because of her worsening condition and religious beliefs, she was turned away from several hospitals.

Fortunately, Jackie heard about the Cancer Treatment Centers of America and contacted them. It was a welcome surprise when they agreed to perform the surgery to remove the tumor while respecting her religious beliefs. During the 8 hour surgery, Jackie’s red blood cell count was stabilized naturally and her surgery was successful. Jackie worked with a Naturopathic physician at The Cancer Treatment Center who provided support during surgery and recovery and also introduced Jackie to the Blood Type Diet. Jackie completed her radiation treatments in April 2000 and remains cancer-free.

Jackie has since completed her Naturopathic studies and has resumed her medical practice and also runs a store where she sells Right for Your Type supplements, teas and groceries. “When patients come to my clinic, the first thing I do is check their blood type. With that done, I have a track to run on. I educate them on the foods they need and carry a line of harder to find foods and snacks. When they are done with their 2.5 hour appointment, they are empowered with a list of recommendations.” Jackie says. We all know how hard it can be to find compliant foods and she does her patients a wonderful service by providing quick access to compliant foods and supplements.

A devotee of the science of blood type, she is an IfHI Master – earning her certification under the tutelage of Dr. D’Adamo himself. She is also one of the first practitioners to have access to Dr. D’Adamo’s SWAMI PRO, computer software which looks at several biometric markers, personalized medical history and a number of other factors and creates the only truly individualized diet. Having access to SWAMI PRO has allowed her access to vital resources using each person’s DNA – this really helps Jackie in her “one size does not fit all” approach. “Each patient is unique and has their own unique factors that determine their nutritional food plan and course of treatment. Being trained in the study of a person’s DNA and working with Dr. D’Adamo is a treasure and valuable asset to being able to help people every day. It takes dedication, but it’s my life’s work and I am determined to help as many as I can.” She sees each patient as an individual with their own individual health concerns, “Whether coming to me for diabetes, fibromyalgia, cancer or warts, they usually seek me out from referrals and want a natural approach to health care of because they have gone to medical doctors and weren’t able to get results.” Jackie has had great success with many patients. Using her Blood Type Diet approach together with her vast wealth of knowledge in other areas of health care, she has not only been able to help her patients get healthy, but STAY healthy.

In addition to her tireless work with her patients, Jackie has spent hours developing “Let’s Get Healthy” classes to promote the principles of the Blood Type Diet to thousands nationwide. She has held over 100 seminars in Michigan, Texas and Maryland. “It is so true that if people do not understand, they will not see the importance of following the program.” Says Jackie. “Personally, I am a cancer survivor, and continue to deal with health issues. I owe my life in part to Dr. D’Adamo and the Blood Type Diet and am using the very knowledge I teach others to keep myself going.

So professionally, I am an Educator. I have been teaching Homeopathy for the National Center for Homeopathy since 1982. I have taught doctors, nurses, mothers, midwives, ER nurses, literally thousands of people in a systematic manner how to use homeopathy. But, Homeopathy does not have all the answers. I also teach that you must use the Blood Type Diet to accompany homeopathy. Homeopathy, together with the Blood Type Diet has produced very favorable results for me personally, as well as for my patients. You could practice homeopathy, but if you are eating the wrong foods for your type, homeopathy won’t hold. Because of my enthusiasm for the Blood Type Diet, it has helped literally hundreds of people. Dr. D’Adamo has infused me with the ability to help others and send the teaching along.”
