Dr. D'Adamo's
Letter: GenoType Monographs and Off-Label Uses of NAP Products
In medicine, an off-label use of a drug is when a doctor prescribes a pharmaceutical outside of the scope of its indication. Surprisingly once the FDA has approved a drug for safety and effectiveness, how and why it is used beyond the ‘label’ is most often left up to the physician. This can be a good thing, since many times an off-label use of a drug results in treatments for conditions in which there is no research money, or drug company interest.
Sometimes we at NAP are just too good at specifying how to use our products! When we indicate that a product is beneficial for a certain GenoType or blood type, the consumer is only left to assume that the product may only work in that particular situation.
Most of the time, this is not true. While a product designed for a Warrior should obviously work best in that GenoType, my clinic practice I’ve often ‘mixed and matched’ based upon the specifics of the patient. For example, I’ve occasionally switched a type B with irritable bowel syndrome to Deflect O temporarily if they do have a hard time initially with the Deflect B formula.
In this issue of the newsletter, my friend and colleague Dr. Natalie Colicci discusses the Synergist line of NAP GenoType Diet products. These are fatty acid formulas that can be handy additions to the supplement protocols of many people, including folks who have chosen to stay with the blood type diet. Over the next few issues, I hope to spotlight a few other ‘off-label’ uses for NAP products that we’ve discovered in the Clinic, which you can use in new and different ways.
Generating quite a bit of new content for the NAP website. NAP needed simple FDA compliant explanations for the GenoType Diet formulas, and I wanted to release some additional information on the GenoType profiles that had been prepared for the book but not used. So I combined both jobs these into six monographs:
Enjoy, and see you next issue!

3 GenoType Synergist Formulas
By Natalie Colicci, ND
The
three Synergist Formulas are comprised with specific fatty
acids; Omega 3 eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexanoic
acid (DHA) from Marine Lipids, Conjugated Linoleic Acid,
and Flaxseed Oil containing Omega 3, 6, and 9 fatty acids.
First introduced in 2008, after being designed specifically
for use in his clinic, Dr. D’Adamo
formulated these products to be used for their abundant therapeutic
effects with his clinic patients.
You may have noticed that the three formulas have been specifically
formulated with the six GenoTypes in mind. Although this is true,
this is not to say that each of these high quality fatty acid supplements
can not be used as supplementation for any GenoType or Blood Type
for that matter. |
 |
You may be wondering why Dr. D’Adamo formulated the Synergist in such as way if this is the case. The reason for this is because all of his many years of extensive research have identified specific strengths and disease susceptibilities in certain groups of individuals. However, Dr. D’Adamo and his clinic physicians are aware that in order to individualize nutrition and wellness, we need to look at the individuality each patient brings to the health and healing equation. We use the Synergist formulas with all of our clinic patients regardless of GenoType or Blood Type if indicated.
For example, perhaps
you are a Warrior or a Blood Type A individual prone to inflammation
related to Rheumatoid Arthritis. A good quality marine lipid
supplement like the Hunter / Explorer Synergist could help
decrease the inflammation and pain associated with this disease.
Another example would be a Hunter or a Blood Type O with a
thrifty metabolism, which may indicate the Gatherer / Warrior
Synergist for its Conjugated Linoleic Acid which has been shown
to decrease abdominal fat and lower insulin resistance. Some
individuals would benefit incorporating more than one of the
Synergist formulas into their lifestyle of healthy diet and
exercise.

Ingredient Focus:
Fatty Acids: Blood Types and GenoTypes:
By Natalie Colicci, ND
Over the last few years there has been an increased focus on the intake of particular fatty acids and the health benefits associated with them. The GenoType Synergist formulas were designed by Dr. Peter D’Adamo to be used for their abundant health related effects.
Although they are designed to work via the GenoType Diet system, GenoType Diet Synergist products can be used by anyone who wishes to benefit from the added intake of healthy fats and oils in their diet.
- Hunter/Explorer Synergist is a great fish oil supplement that can help
maintain tissue inflammation at low, healthy levels
- Gatherer/Warrior Synergist helps increase metabolism and maintain healthy muscle mass and can be a useful addition to a weight management program
- Nomad/Teacher Synergist can help maintain proper immunity and may enhance the body’s anti-cancer defenses.
Let’s take a moment to examine these formulas in a
bit of detail.
Hunter Synergist / Explorer Synergist
The Synergist formula is designed to offset the excess of omega-6 oils found in meats and most vegetable oils found in their diets, which can cause them to suffer a relative deficiency of the omega-3 oils. Particularly important to good health are the longer chain omega-3 fatty acids such as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexanoic acid (DHA) found in fish, especially cold-water fish such as anchovy and sardine--two beneficial fish for Hunter and Explorer GenoTypes.
Probably one of the most heard about fatty acids are those that are derived from
fish oil. These omega-3 fatty acids called eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexanoic
acid (DHA) have been extensively studied for their therapeutic effects in numerous
diseases. One of its most known effects is its ability to modulate inflammation
decreasing the excessive production of pro-inflammatory chemicals called eicosanoids.
Excessive amounts of eicosanoids have been associated with increased blood clots,
higher levels of histamine, and auto-immune diseases such as seen in lupus and
rheumatoid arthritis.
Omega-3 fatty acids can also help decrease LDL cholesterol (the bad cholesterol) and triglycerides and increase HDL cholesterol (the good cholesterol). They have also been shown to increase insulin sensitivity, and reduce the amount of free fatty acids in circulation, important issues in individuals with obesity, diabetes and metabolic syndrome.
Studies have been conducted on the effects of omega-3 fatty acids supplementation in individuals with cognitive and depressive symptoms as well. One recent studied showed that omega-3 fatty acids supplementation suggested a possible role of fatty acids intake in maintaining adequate cognitive functioning and possibly in preventing or delaying the onset of dementia. Omega-3 fatty acids modulate the amount of inflammation and enhance production of neurotransmitters (chemicals required for normal brain function which are important in the treatment of depression).
Hunter / Explorer Synergist is a Marine Lipid Concentrate that comes from the South Pacific, off the coast of Peru from deep ocean waters, some of the purest, untouched waters in the world. This pharmaceutical grade marine lipid concentrate offers the assurance that you are meeting your requirements for these valuable long-chain omega-3 fatty acids without the fear of mercury or other free from lipid peroxides, heavy metals, environmental contaminants, and other harmful compounds.
Gatherer / Warrior Synergist
The Synergist formula was designed to offset the metabolic thrifty tendencies of these two GenoTypes by enhancing muscle growth and increasing insulin sensitivity. The best lipid source for this activity is Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA). Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) is a fatty acid found naturally in meat and dairy food. Conjugated Linoleic Acid supplements currently are derived from sunflower oil.
Conjugated Linoleic Acid reduces fat and preserves muscle tissue. According to the research project manager, an average reduction of six pounds of body fat was found in the group that took CLA, compared to a placebo group. CLA supplementation has shown to improve the lean mass to body fat ratio, decreasing fat deposition, especially on the abdomen, and enhancing muscle growth. To achieve this, CLA reduces body fat by enhancing insulin sensitivity so that fatty acids and glucose can pass through muscle cell membranes and away from fat tissue. This results in an improved muscle to fat ratio. Compelling evidence indicates that CLA can promote youthful metabolic function and reduce body fat. CLA also enhances the immune system—many studies have shown that CLA seems to possess significant cancer preventive effects.
As with any fatty acid, CLA can be oxidized by free radicals once it has been ingested. However, with healthy eating habits and lifestyle, both of which are an integral part of the GenoType and Blood Type diets, the production of free radicals is always decreased, a fact that has been clinically shown with our patients by testing urine free radical loads.
Nomad / Teacher Synergist
The Nomad/Teacher Synergist designed to provide 1,000 mg of flax seed oil providing a correct balance of Omega-3, Omega-6, Omega-9, and flaxseed lignans.
Flaxseed oil omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to reduce inflammation and help prevent certain chronic diseases such as heart disease and arthritis. These essential fatty acids appear to be particularly important for cognitive and behavioral function as well as normal growth and development. Lignans, such as those found in flaxseed oil, appear to help modulate excess growth factors levels later in life (which may help enhance longevity) and encourage the proper removal of cells damaged by aging or mutation.
Flaxseed oil has been found to lower cholesterol and saturated fatty acids and inhibit plaque formation in blood vessels not only on via physical mechanisms but also on the cellular level antiproliferative and anti-inflammatory actions. Research of such studies show that Flaxseed oil may not only be beneficial in preventing atherosclerosis, but reducing risk factors for coronary artery disease and stroke.
Flaxseed lignans belonging to the phytoestrogens are metabolized after ingestion
into enterolignans that may offer a protection against the onset and development
of hormone-dependant cancers. Flaxseed has also shown to inhibit established
human breast cancer growth and metastasis, and this effect is partly due to its
down regulation of insulin-like growth factor I and epidermal growth factor receptor
expression, two substances over expressed in such a disease.

Spotlight: Larry
Nesbit & the Mini Conference
| If
you ask Larry Nesbit of Crossville Tennessee how the Blood Type Diet
has changed his life it would probably take him all day to tell you – not
only does he teach seminars, he’s started a blood type food co-op,
he’s discussed the Blood Type Diet on TV, radio and in several
newspapers and earned his IfHI Master level certification - but in October
he is hosting a BT conference and certification in Crossville for over
200 people where Dr. D’Adamo will speak. “Larry has to
be one of the most dedicated and active supporters of Eat Right 4 Your
Type that I have had the pleasure to meet,” says Dr. D’Adamo. |
Spreading
the word about Blood Type has become a vocation for Larry, “This
is my life’s work. I’m an O. I’m active. I have to
have things to do.” He will certainly have a lot to do in the
next few months – Larry is organizing the Plateau Eat Righters
Mini Conference and IfHI Approved Certification Testing. This one day
seminar will take place on October, 25, 2008 at the Tennessee Technology
Center in Crossville, Tennessee. Dr. D’Adamo will be the Featured
Speaker. Larry is expecting over 200 people to attend and certify. Seating
is limited and few spaces are left. If you are interested in attending
the conference, please contact Larry Nesbit at 931-456-9245 or er4yt@frontiernet.net
To understand where he’s coming from, you have to go back to his childhood. “When
I was 2 years old,” says Larry, “I drowned in gasoline, it burnt
my stomach and lungs and I became an asthmatic. It got a little better in my
teens, then came back in my 20’s and got worse. When I was 11, I was thrown
from a horse and injured my back. I had back problems ever sense which worsened
with age.” At the age of 60, Larry was classified as totally disabled.
Not only did he suffer from asthma and back pain, he also had arthritis. “I
was walking with a cane and on 13 different meds.” |

|
One
evening, his granddaughter told him that, according to a book she was
reading, people with Type O blood should be meat eaters. Intrigued, Larry
began reading the book that night and never looked back. “I read
95 pages of the book that night, I was so bound to it, I couldn’t
quit.” The results speak for themselves, he’s lost, and
kept off, 52 pounds, went off all the medication, was able to walk without
the cane, and as of March, 2007, is no longer considered asthmatic. His
doctor was amazed at the results and confided to Larry that was also
on The Blood Type Diet.
He began his mission to educate others about the benefits of eating right for
their type one day while he was accompanying his wife to the store. “After
I had been on the diet for 4 months, I felt well enough to ride in a car. I accompanied
my wife one day when she went shopping and I was waiting in the car. As I sat
there, I would watch people. I could tell that some people were in pain, limping,
overweight. I thought, ‘I’ve got to tell these people about the Blood
Type Diet.’ I knew the activity director at the senior center. I went
to talk to her and suggested that we start a class.” Since that time,
he’s had over 800 people attend his classes and also does one-on-one Blood
Type Diet consulting.
Sometimes he meets people who are skeptical about The Blood Type Diet, “But
then I explain how it works. Then I tell them my story. When they hear my story,
they think it’s awesome!”

Success Story:
Jamie Robin
Jamie Robin knew she needed to lose weight. The 31 year old singer/songwriter, full-figured model, actress and graphic designer had tried everything and when the scale was moving past 279 lbs, she knew she had to take action. “I promised my little sister that if my last attempt failed, I would get gastric bypass. I knew that this was NOT an option for me – so I knew it was now or never.” Thanks to her new Blood Type and GenoType lifestyle, she has lost 70 pounds and is well on her way to her goal weight.
Jamie had always struggled with her weight, “I was an overweight child. Then I thinned out and nearly became anorexic during my early teen years. I was in a dance company and had a very warped body image. I was 5’8 and 140 pounds and all I could see when I looked in the mirror was that I had fat knees. The dance company didn’t help my self image – they put me on probation because I wasn’t thin enough. I had actual curves and looking back was stunning, but the teenagers I was dancing next to were built like little boys. I thought that I was fat, and I thought that being fat meant being ugly. Eventually I stopped dancing and my physical body caught up with my mental body image. It took me to get to 270+ lbs. to realize that being fat did NOT mean being ugly. I realized that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes, but that I needed to lose weight because I DESERVE to be healthy and happy. I was already good enough and my weight had nothing to do with that. However, I deserve to be at my ideal weight to accomplish the things that I was put here to do. My goal was and is to be the best version of myself that I can be!” |
 |
Jamie
tried everything – all the popular diets and even a weight
loss camp where she lost almost 40 pounds, but put it all back
on again. She tried out for the popular TV show, The Biggest
Loser, twice and made it to the final round both times. When
she didn’t make the final cut the second time, she decided
not to wait another year – she would do it on her own.
She consulted a naturopathic physician, Dr. Steve Nenninger,
to help her to find a diet to support her thyroid. Dr. Nenninger
puts all his patients on the Blood Type and GenoType Diets.
Jamie was familiar with Eat Right 4 Your Type, as she had read
it in college, but she was, “too addicted to white flour
and sugar and not ready to stick to it.” This Type O
Gatherer learned that staying away from most grains and eating
a diet of more whole, natural foods that you would find in
nature helps her to lose weight. “I find that in general,
staying away from wheat, processed sugar, soy and milk help
me to lose weight.” says Jamie.
The first two weeks on the diet was “REALLY hard” for Jamie. “But
just knowing in black and white that I had to stay away from grains, dairy, soy
and processed sugar made it easier because it was so clean cut. Finding foods
I COULD eat and really liked was challenging at first, because I was so dependent
on bread and dairy, but knowing that I had NO choice forced me to look at other
options, mostly fruit, to cut the cravings. Berries are my best friends. I eat
as many whole organic foods as possible. The more natural the state, the better
the food. She says she still eats some things in moderation on the weekends -
that includes a little wheat and dairy. “I figure that if I have the weekend
when I can ‘cheat’ it helps me stay on track during the week. There
is no way that with one or two weekend days I could undo all the good I did in
5 days during the week.”
|

|
Food cravings had been a problem for Jamie in the past, but with this new lifestyle
she has found that her cravings are much less. “My body has woken up to
the fact and sense that certain foods are just not good for it. That’s
why it’s a lifestyle change. Diets don’t work. When I really crave
something that is completely counterproductive to my new lifestyle (like a cupcake),
I buy it, take two bites and throw it out before I finish the third bite. I know
it’s not cost-effective, but it’s better in the garbage than on my
thighs.”
Even after her traumatic childhood experience with dance, Jamie has not lost
her passion for it and takes a dance class four to five times a week. “They’re
fun and challenging” says Jamie. When she can’t make a dance class,
she will use the elliptical machine for 45 minutes. “When I started, I
could only do it for 10 minutes, so I did more dance classes than the machine,
but as I lost weight it became easier. On really motivated days, I do a dance
class and the elliptical.” She also lives in New York City, and will walk
to work on nice days and enjoys walking around the City on the weekends, exploring
street fairs and shopping.
|
 |
Like most New Yorkers
she finds that she eats out often and says that it’s not
too hard to find “friendly” foods in restaurants.
She says she orders what she wants and if it comes with an “avoid” food,
like a bun, she will take them off her plate, but generally orders
food that she knows she will feel good about after she’s
eaten it. “It’s really not that hard when you’ve
changed your lifestyle.” Jamie says confidently.
It was with the understanding that a lifestyle change needed
to take place that Jamie began this journey. Right after she
met with Dr. Nenninger, and just before she started the diet,
she saw a documentary about the science of addiction and how
it affects the brain, “Our cells become physically dependent
on a particular polypeptide and we have to have it over and over
again. A light went off in my brain when I heard that. It was
not ME that was addicted, it was my BODY. I realized it was not
my fault; it really was a physical addition on all levels. I
had to take control of my body…and it was hard, but it
was a conscious behavioral change that I needed to make in order
to change my body’s chemical dependency on its own internal
substances. I am in control of my behavior and once my behavioral
patterns started to change, my brain started to work differently
and started to form new patterns in relation to exercise and
food.” |
Jamie is such an inspiration and has been enjoying the benefits of her new lifestyle and new body – “my sisters are thrilled that I’ve lost weight. My entire life has changed. I have more energy, I get more attention when I go out and I’m also friendlier to new people.” A new life indeed!
