In a World of Goliaths, It’s Good to Be a David

The nutritional supplements market has changed dramatically over the last 25 years, and nothing illustrates this more dramatically than an infographic showcasing 14 mega-corporations that own the major supplement brands.

When we first started making supplements, the industry was smaller and dominated by independently-owned companies, “mom and pops” who were trailblazers in the field. Everyone knew one another, and there was a true sense of a shared vision for educating the public about natural products and the promise they held for improving one’s health and quality of life. Of course, there was always a little competition, but we were rooting for each other … we were a merry band of “Davids” in a world of “Goliaths.”

Fast forward 25 years later, and the nutritional supplements market is a big business with huge financial potential, a fact reflected in the amounts of money poured into it by the “big guys.” Lots more Goliaths and fewer Davids, mostly due to the sheer cost to source, produce and market products. It’s no longer about shelf space in stores, it’s about who has the bigger Google AdWords budget and social media platforms.

The key ingredients were actually detected in amounts 7-10% higher than those reported on the label, which impressed the inspector. Not bad for a small company!
