Spring into Action: Reducing the Effects of Allergies

Allergies - one of the world’s most common chronic conditions – afflicts even more of us at this time of year as we add seasonal allergies to the list of environmental, food, pet, and other allergies and chronic conditions that affect millions all year round.

At least one in ten Americans find themselves sneezing through the spring season and in some sections of the US, where pollen levels have soared, that number may be even higher.

What’s Going On?

The immune system has very sophisticated mechanisms for locating and eliminating anything in the body that is deemed to be ‘foreign’ or ‘not self.’ Allergies are the result of your immune system overreacting to otherwise harmless substances. These can be pollens, pet dander, dust, mold, food, and any number of substances in our environment.

Seasonal allergies are triggered when the body inhales pollen and it becomes trapped in the mucus layer of the nasal passages. The body overreacts to the presence of pollens by sending out too much of the antibody immunoglobulin, which in turn, triggers the body to pump out histamine – causing runny noses, watery eyes, sneezing, itching…well, you get the picture.

Who’s at Risk?

Interestingly, there is genetic component to allergies. When one parent has allergies, there is a 1 in 3 chance that their children will too. If both parents have allergies, the chances increase to 7 in 10. At least 3 genes are believed to be responsible for allergy, but only one has been identified. People who are 15 to 25 years of age are the most allergy prone, but allergies can develop at any age.

Dr. D’Adamo writes in his book, Allergies: Fight Them with the Blood Type Diet. that hay fever appears to be more specific to people with Blood Types O and B (specifically, grass pollen in B’s). And, regardless of type, being a non-secretor heightens the risk of allergies and other inflammatory conditions.

What Can I Do About It?

Here are a few tips to reduce your exposure to seasonal allergens:

    • Install a high quality air filter to trap pollens and dust.
    • Try a neti-pot to clear pollen from the nasal passageways
    • Shower before bedtime to remove pollen that can cling to hair and trigger an attack
    • Minimize your outdoor time from 5am to 10 am when pollens are most active and on windy days. If you must garden or mow the lawn; wear a mask to reduce inhalation of pollens.

Beyond avoiding the substances your immune system is overreacting to, you can also support your body’s natural ability to balance the immune system and promote normal immune reaction with diet and supplementation. For example, you can eat the “highly beneficial” foods recommended by the Blood Type Diet!

Many people report that their seasonal allergies improved after starting to Eat Right for Their Type. In reviewing Dr. D’Adamo’s Live Right 4 Your Type on Amazon.com, Dan from Colorado writes,

“I not only lost weight effortlessly by eliminating "Avoids" from my diet, but I also required less sleep, and my cat allergy became dormant. [When] I got lazy, and started eating foods that I should avoid... the cat allergy was the first thing to come back.”

Fight Allergies Naturally

Here are some additional tips from Dr. D’Adamo’s book, Allergies: Fight Them with the Blood Type Diet.

    Blood Type O
    • More prone to inflammation than other blood types
    • Higher risk for asthma and hay fever
    • Allergic reactions exacerbated by most grains and starches, especially wheat, corn, sorghum and barley
    • Try Sprouted grain breads (see article on Great Grains)
    • Protein, in the form of lean, organic meat, is crucial to Type O digestive health and immune balance
    • Be sure to eat plenty of the ‘Super Beneficials’ listed in the Allergy Book, like halibut, pineapple and turmeric
    • Look into natural supplements and herbal formulas that support a normal immune response, and help your body manage and recover from the symptoms associated with allergies
    Blood Type A
    • Tendency to produce high level of ‘Selectins’, which can lead to hyperactive inflammatory response
    • Tendency to produce excess mucus
    • Predisposed to bronchial asthma in childhood
    • Get most of your protein from non-meat sources
    • Add Soy-based foods to your diet
    • Try Protein Blend (powder) Right 4 Your Type
    • Add other ‘Super Beneficials’ like Salmon and Cranberry, see the Allergy book for lists of these foods
    • Look into natural supplements and herbal formulas that support a normal immune response, and help your body manage and recover from the symptoms associated with allergies
    Blood Type B
    • Prone to greater severity of chronic inflammation of the lungs including bronchial asthma or pollinosis
    • Higher susceptibility to grass pollen
    • Allergies can be exacerbated by eating ‘avoid’ meats, especially chicken
    • Limit cheese consumption
    • Try the Sip Right 4 Your Type Tea for Type B, containing Ginger, which has anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory activities
    • Add ‘Super Beneficials’ to your diet, like cultured dairy and elderberries – see the Allergy book for more of these foods for Type B
    • Look into natural supplements and herbal formulas that support a normal immune response, and help your body manage and recover from the symptoms associated with allergies
    Blood Type AB
    • Greatest resistance to respiratory allergies of all the blood types
    • AB's share some of the qualities of both Type A and Type B including tendency to overproduce ‘Selectins’ and susceptibility to viral and bacterial infections which can in turn trigger autoimmune inflammatory response
    • Derive your protein from mostly non-meat sources and avoid chicken
    • Add Soy and cultured dairy to your diet
    • Substitute green tea for coffee. The EGCG in green tea blocks receptors involved in allergic response
    • Substitute Cauliflower, a ‘Super Beneficial’ food for Type B , instead of corn and oat, rice or rye flour instead of corn flour
    • Look into natural supplements and herbal formulas that support a normal immune response, and help your body manage and recover from the symptoms associated with allergies
