Love. Once the marketers have gotten the New Year/New You resolutions sold, they turn to selling “love” in February, with red hearts, flowers and candies. As a younger woman I have to confess to liking the romantic notions attached to Valentine’s Day, but as I have gotten older, I’ve come to a greater understanding of what love is as well as knowing that it is one of life’s great mysteries as well.
What I do know about love is that it is to the soul what food is to the body; it nourishes, it strengthens, it fuels us in good times and in bad. Love can be found in our relationships, in our gardens, in our passions, in our work. I feel so fortunate to have experienced love in each of these areas—in
varying degrees—throughout my life.
The importance of love of work or livelihood was reinforced this past year as I took on the role of overseeing the production of our soon-to-be-released e-cookbooks for each blood type. I have had the privilege of working alongside Peter and Kristin O’Connor as we developed what I believe is a reflection of Peter’s love and dedication for his work and Kristin’s love and dedication for healthy nourishment and food preparation.
This is a real artistry behind food preparation—what flavors go well with each other, what ingredients compliment or enhance the tastes or textures of a certain food, what method of preparation is best suited for a particular recipe. Add to this the challenge of designing 150 recipes for each blood type, and you have a glimpse at how masterful Kristin is as a chef, an artist, and a food alchemist! I’ve sampled the recipes, shared them with friends and family, photographed them, and now, I am thrilled to share them with you.
The Personalized Living Using the Blood Type Diet e-books are the first in a series of books that we will produce to enhance your experience following the blood type diet. They are designed to be useful tools and constant companions in the kitchen and life, and I am thrilled to share them with you.
Equally as thrilling is the formalization of the Center of Excellence in Generative
Medicine at the University of Bridgeport in CT. We have been working on this
for three years, and it a testimony to Peter’s dedication and commitment to his
research and the vision and foresight of the University to recognize the contribution
that the COE will make to not only naturopathic medicine but to the future of
medicine and health and well-being as well. You can find out more about this
initiative at www.generativemedicine.org.
I’d love to share a private moment with you that you won’t
find on the site...it’s a photo taken on a cold winter’s day
as we visited the building that will house the COE on campus. The back
porch is being repaired, and I caught a glimpse of Peter in a reflective
moment...I am sure his thoughts were on the craftsmanship of the work as
well as the future of humankind.

| The University of Bridgeport and
New York Times bestselling author Dr. Peter D'Adamo announce the new Center
for Excellence in Generative Medicine |

|
Bridgeport, CT (January 26, 2012) The University of Bridgeport (UB) and
Dr. Peter J. D'Adamo, internationally acclaimed clinician, researcher
and author of the bestselling Eat Right 4 Your Type, announced today
the collaborative launch of the Center for Excellence in Generative
Medicine (COE) which will be located at 115 Broad Street across from
the UB Health Sciences Complex on campus, and it is scheduled to open
in Spring 2012.

The COE will continue to train naturopathic doctors while broadening the
College of Naturopathic Medicine's curriculum. It also will sponsor research
in the fields of nutrigenomics and epigenetics, which examines how human
genes interact and are affected by the environment, lifestyle and diet.
University President Neil A. Salonen, Dr. David M. Brady, Vice Provost
for Health Sciences, and Dr. D'Adamo signed the official agreement for
the Center at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, January 24, at a ceremony held on the
eighth floor of the UB’s Wahlstrom Library.
"Dr. Peter D'Adamo is a giant in the field of naturopathic and integrative
medicine, and he has made transformational changes in the way thousands
of doctors treat their patients. He has taught them to better manage and
reduce patient's risk for various chronic health conditions. Having him
here at UB uniquely allows our students and interns to be mentored by him
while in their primary training and provides patients in the Greater Bridgeport
area affordable access to this comprehensive approach to health care," said
Brady.
"From our first discussions about the possibility of a Center of Excellence
in Generative Medicine, almost three years ago, our goal was to investigate
the use of new technologies, algorithms and philosophies as applied to
a new type of patient care; one that is personalized and crafted according
to these generative principles," said D'Adamo. "I believe that
today we embark on a project that holds great promise for humankind and
I am especially proud that this initiative has found a partner in the University
of Bridgeport, a recognized educational world leader in the field of integrative
medical education."
Dr. Elizabeth Pimentel, Dean of the College of Naturopathic Medicine, echoed
Brady's enthusiasm. "We are thrilled that we are able to offer our
students the opportunity to learn from someone who has been called the
'most creative scientist in the western world' and who is a true pioneer
in our profession. Many people made this happen, not the least of which
are the students who have embraced these changes whole-heartedly. Special
thanks to the Curriculum Committee who were quick to see how this collaboration
would benefit our college and the patients served by our clinic, and to
the Clinic staff who go above and beyond to make the shift run smoothly."
As planned, the center builds upon D'Adamo's work, which became well known
with the 1996 publication of Eat Right 4 Your Type, which promoted
the ideas of blood type, diet and personalized nutrition. For the past
15 years, D'Adamo has continued his research on human biochemical individuality
and he has published over 20 books, including the recent, Fundamentals of
Generative Medicine, Vol. I.
The Center of Excellence in Generative Medicine is a revolutionary initiative,
and it is without parallel or equivalent in any other school of medicine.
With the addition of the new Center of Excellence, "we will enhance
the naturopathic curriculum as well as provide patients the opportunity
to receive this cutting-edge care," Brady said.

Every month I receive emails from readers whose health has been improved by eating
right for their type. I am constantly amazed by your stories—your strength
and determination serve as an inspiration to me and I hope that the success
stories that we post inspire you to continue your quest for optimal health
through individualized nutrition. This month, we have a special treat for you.
Kristin O’Connor, the author of the Personalized Living Using the Blood
Type Diet Cookbooks, shares her journey—from the web of the traditional medical system to her discovery of personalized nutrition – and how it changed not only her health, but the direction of her life and career.
Q: How did you find the Blood Type Diet?
KO: I had health issues. It was one thing after another and the medical doctors that I saw said that I would have to be on medication for life, and at 21 years old, I did not want to face a life of being on meds. With nowhere else to go, I turned to alternative medicine. The doctor that I saw put me on a diet that eliminated gluten, soy and dairy. I noticed a difference immediately—which makes sense now that I know that I am blood type O—but I still had to be on some medication. My mother had also been sick and she went to see Dr. D’Adamo. Within three months she was 75% better and within six months she had fully recovered. Seeing her amazing recovery prompted me to go too, I can now say that I’m almost completely off all medication!
Q: How has the Blood Type Diet changed your life?
KO: Obviously, the health benefits have been fantastic! When I started making my dietary changes, I had been working as an art therapist at an after school program for children, but I had always loved to cook. As I implemented the changes in my own diet and saw the difference that it made for me, I wanted to spread the word about healthy eating. I thought the easiest way to do this would be to have a cooking show on the Food Network! However, never having had a cooking show, or professional cooking experience, I realized it was a long shot – but that didn’t stop me. I was hired by a production company who developed a show to pitch to Food Network. While the Food Network liked my demo, they passed on the show. The fantastic news was that the same production company who pitched my show, hired me as an Associate Producer—I was thrilled.
Q: How did your experience in television production for the Food Network and the Cooking Channel prepare you to write these cookbooks?
KO: My responsibilities in production vary dramatically from contributing to recipe development, working with the culinary team, and doing lots of research. Being in that environment, surrounded by amazingly talented chefs taught me so much about food—being on set really helped me develop a wide knowledge of food.
Q: How did you come to write the Personalized Living Using the Blood
Type Diet cookbooks with Dr.
D’Adamo?
KO: It was all very serendipitous! I was seeing Dr. D’Adamo as a patient and he asked me what I was working on. I explained that I was a contributor to a website called Healthy Child Healthy World as well as the creator of my own blog on eating for optimal health, in addition to doing production work for the Food Network. He mentioned that he was thinking of developing four new Blood Type Diet e-cookbooks and it took off from there.
Q: How are the Personalized Living Using the Blood Type Diet cookbooks different than a basic recipe book?
KO: It’s unique because they are not just recipes. I wanted to create a lifestyle cookbook that helps both novices and people who are already familiar with the diet to adapt even more easily. In the books, I introduce new beneficial foods that people may not necessarily be familiar with and make them accessible through the “Featured Ingredient” sections, I include a list of pantry staples, tips for setting up your kitchen, I outline the major avoid foods and where they are hidden in everyday products, and of course, lots and lots of simple go-to recipes. We’ve tested the recipes and had independent testers make them too, so we know that they work and are delicious!
Q: Where are you going from here?
KO: I am having a great time writing my Personalized Living Using the Blood
Type Diet blog, which can be found at www.dadamopersonalizedliving.com, and
I have a few other exciting projects in the works...although still hoping someday
the Food Network will pick up a Kristin O’Connor show of some sort—maybe someday
they will realize the need for a healthy living show!
