Digestion Exerpted from: Eat Right 4 Your Type Complete Blood Type Encyclopedia
Peter D'Adamo, ND, MIfHI

Good digestion results not only from choosing the right foods for our bodies, but also by keeping our digestive systems tuned and balanced so that the interplay of all important elements, such as digestive juices and hormones, are optimized for maximum nutrient absorption and regular elimination.

The entire microbial ecosystem of the digestive tract is under the influence of your blood group. Blood type genetics not only influence the levels of digestive juices and enzymes needed to efficiently metabolize food, they program the cellular characteristics of our entire digestive tract.

Many foods contain components that can react directly with the blood group antigens, resulting in inflammation and the production of toxins. Other foods address susceptibilities and strengthen our bodies against these weaknesses. Good digestion results not only from choosing the right foods for our bodies, but also by keeping our digestive systems tuned and balanced so that the interplay of all important elements, such as digestive juices and hormones, are optimized for maximum nutrient absorption and regular elimination.

The following are protocols for healthy stomach and optimal digestion. Use protocol for 4 weeks.

BTD/GTD Community

We are reaching a critical mass as awareness of how personalized medicine and the emerging science of nutrigenomics is transforming the health care system and creating a new age in medicine. We are almost at the “tipping point,” that place in which individualized medicine becomes the norm, and every day, each one of us makes a difference in making the change possible.

The spring has brought new opportunities for us and for the extended BTD/GTD community, and it has been very gratifying to witness the concepts of personalized medicine take hold around the world. The web of connections has expanded through our work at NAP as well as through the work of individuals who are utilizing these concepts both personally and professionally, and I wanted to share some of stories with you.

Our own Dr. Roseanne Nenninger was the guest presenter at the D’Adamo Personalized Nutrition Monthly Support Group, which provides guidance and education about utilizing the Blood Type and GenoType concepts for better health and well-being. Roseanne addressed how to further personalize your diet through the GenoType diet, and she GenoTyped attendees by taking their measurements, fingerprinting, and determining the GTD profile. It was a great evening, and it reinforced the importance of sharing and the collective experience as we explore our individual uniqueness.

Dr. Peter D’Adamo was the keynote speaker at the spring Conference sponsored by the Incite Center for Wellness and Education located in Norwich, CT. True to form, Peter gave a phenomenal lecture about the principles of personalized medicine, “A Study Size of One,” and he shared his vision for the future of medicine. I was very touched by the level of commitment that the attendees had to bettering their health and the lives of others. This was reinforced by the generosity of the Jeanne Zuzel, RN, MA, who coordinated the event and her team of volunteers who were responsible for producing a successful and rewarding weekend for attendees.

On May 26, we participated in the Greenwich Health Expo in Stamford, CT. The Expo is the brainchild of Lisa Wynne Salvatore, a long-time patient, friend and colleague. Lisa brought together 50 companies to highlight their products and services, and the event was attended by over 400 people. It was energizing to see the wide range of products and services available to people as they pursue health and well-being. I couldn’t help but reflect on how far we’ve come in 25 years since Peter and I first looked at possible locations in Connecticut for his practice!

Melissa Bennett, ND, MIfHI, Judy McCoy, FIfHI, along with successful Blood Type Dieter, Cheryl Espina, were recently featured on CBS Atlanta website about the benefits of the Blood Type Diet. It's a terrific spot, and I think you'll enjoy watching it. The segment was taped on May 25, 2010. Click here to go to the CBS Atlanta website and view the video (2:42):

Key to Healthiness May be in Your Blood

We’ve launched the Spanish-version of the 4yourtype.com www.northamericanpharmacal.com/hispanica to provide support for individuals throughout the world who speak Spanish as their primary language. Javier Caceres, our financial controller, took the lead on this project, and he worked very closely with Lola Pliego, MIfHI, our longtime friend and colleague, who has been working with us to bring the NAP products into Mexico.

On the other side of the planet, Gina Mundy, MIfHI, continues to build awareness for the concept in New Zealand (http://www.right4yourtypenz.com/) and Australia (http://www.right4yourtypeau.com/). Just last week, she participated in an Expo in Sydney that had over 15,000 attendees! Gina has been a tremendous supporter and an ardent believer, and she’s been working diligently to bring the concepts of personalized medicine to her community.

These are just a few examples of the grassroots activism that is going on around the world. Each one of us is being called to make choices in our lives that express our individuality and our sense of purpose for who we uniquely are, whether it is in how we care for ourselves nutritionally or in the choices we make for our professions and our avocations.

Finally, a nod to all the fathers out there, as we enter June and the celebration of Father’s Day. Being a dad today is a lot different than being a dad in the 1950’s. I love watching men really enjoy being involved in their children’s lives – it is important for the children and it is equally as important for the men. I am reminded of the beautiful line from William Wordsworth, “The child is the father of the man.”

To you and all those you love, happy June.

Martha

Dr. D'Adamo's Lectures: Blood Type is Not Just in Blood

On May 1, Dr. D’Adamo presented to a group of 50 students who participated in the IfHI 2010 Micro-Conference and Certification testing in Nashville, TN. Here is a clip of one of the lectures discussing the prevalence of the blood type antigen throughout the human body. (Excerpted from the Conference) (3:46)

Probiotics and Blood Type
Ann Quasarano

Blood group and secretor status play an important role in conditioning the overall characteristics of the digestive tract, including influencing the appearance and frequency of many strains of bacteria..

Did you know that there are 20 times more bacteria than cells in your body, or that you have more bacteria in your body at this very moment than the total number of people who have ever lived on the planet? This may sound alarming, but these tiny organisms are crucial to good health.

A probiotic is an organism which contributes to the health and balance of the intestinal tract. These “friendly” or “beneficial” bacteria live in your small and large intestines, support your immune system, and contribute to healthy digestion.

A number of companies have recognized the importance of these friendly bacteria and are supplementing their yogurt products with probiotics. Turn on the TV during the traditional mid-morning and afternoon programming hours aimed at women, and you’ll be invited to take the “challenge” that one company is offering—your money back if you don’t see improvement in digestion after one month. While it’s great that people are becoming more aware of how these good bacteria contribute to digestion, they don’t mention that specific strains of bacteria are beneficial or harmful in the gut of people with different blood types.

What does blood type have to do with friendly bacteria? According to Dr. D’Adamo, there are three things:
  • Your blood type antigens are prominent in your digestive tract and in about 80% of individuals (secretors), are also prominent in the mucus that lines your digestive tract. Because of this, many of the bacteria in your digestive tract actually use your blood type as a preferred food supply. In fact, blood group specificity is common among intestinal bacteria with almost 1/2 of strains tested showing some blood type A, B, or O specificity. To give you an idea of the magnitude of the blood type influence on intestinal microflora, it has been estimated that someone with blood type B will have up to 50,000 times more of some strains of friendly bacteria than either blood type A or O individuals.
  • Some strains of beneficial bacteria can have lectin-like hemagglutinin activity directed against your blood type, so avoiding those is a good idea.
  • Polyflora Blood Type Specific Probiotics also blend prebiotics (foods which provide special growth factors for probiotic bacteria) that are right for each blood type.
In a recent blog, Dr. D’Adamo referenced two recent studies that link type II diabetes, obesity, and the lack of intestinal flora. He says, “Increasingly, studies are showing that changes in the microflora content of the digestive tract can be linked to metabolic illnesses, including type II (adult onset) diabetes and obesity. Blood group and secretor status play an important role in conditioning the overall characteristics of the digestive tract, including influencing the appearance and frequency of many strains of bacteria.”

Routinely taking probiotics that are Right for Your Type improves digestion, enhances bioavailability, promotes detoxification and better absorption of nutrients, and enhances immunity. There is also evidence that routine use of probiotics lowers LDL (bad cholesterol), inhibits Candida (yeast), and may even prevent nitrates from being converted into cancer causing nitrosamines.

As a point of interest, the word probiotic means, “in favor of life.” I’m in favor of that!
