The word allergy means “altered working.” It was coined at the beginning of the twentieth century, after dogs inoculated with proteins from other animals had severe reactions when they came into contact with those proteins again. Allergies are responses mounted by the immune system to a particular food, inhalant, or chemical. In a simplified sense, an allergic reaction is an adverse or inappropriately amplified immune system response to something that many other people find harmless. Most commonly, an allergic reaction expresses itself as a headache or fatigue, and may include sneezing, watery eyes, and nasal congestion. More severe allergic reactions, such as those to certain nuts, fish, and insect stings are known as anaphylaxis and are characterized by the swelling of tissue and the inability to breathe. These reactions may need to be treated as serious medical emergencies. A synthetic epinephrine, a hormone naturally produced by the adrenal gland, may be administered to combat the reaction. People with severe allergies should carry epinephrine pens in case of accidental exposure to the allergen. According to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), people with allergies spend more than $5 billion annually on doctors’ visits, allergy shots, and prescription mediations. Many health conditions are related to allergies, including acne, asthma, attention deficit disorders, bladder infections, and a host of digestive disorders. | Climate Change May Extend Allergy Season | ||
|
Ann Quasarano |

Does it feel like those first allergy symptoms are starting earlier? It could be the result of global warming! At a meeting of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology in New Orleans, scientists presented information from a study indicating that climate change may be extending pollen seasons. According to a team at Genoa University in Italy, pollen seasons, as well as the amount of pollen in the air, progressively increased during a 26 year study in Italy. The study group recorded pollen counts, how long pollen seasons lasted and sensitivity to five different types of pollen in the Bordighera region of Italy from 1981 to 2007. “By studying a well-defined geographical region, we observed that the progressive increase in the average temperature has prolonged the duration of the pollen seasons of some plants and, consequently, the overall pollen load,” Dr. Walter Canonica, who worked on the study, said in a statement. Christine Rogers, a research associate in Environmental Science and Engineering at Harvard University agrees. In a recent interview in the LiveScience newsletter, she is quoted as saying, “There have been significant increases in allergies and asthma in recent decades which cannot be explained by any change in genetics.” Rogers reviewed the scientific literature on the change in plant flowering times and airborne pollen concentrations over the last few decades. “Plants are flowering significantly earlier over time and advancing the season by approximately 0.8 days per year,” Rogers said. Allergic rhinitis, commonly known as hay fever, is a reaction to indoor and outdoor airborne allergens, such as pollen. Longer pollen seasons and high levels of pollen certainly can exacerbate symptoms for people with allergies and for those who previously had minimal symptoms. The US Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that about 25 million Americans suffer from allergies – nearly half of them are children. |

| Self Defense | ||

As a martial artist, I am trained to be aware of my surroundings and alert to outside threats. Thankfully, most of my training has been in the studio, and I’ve never had to put my self-defense techniques to the test. I spoke about this recently with my teacher, and he asked a provocative question: Was this due to not ever being in a threatening situation, or because I was alert and aware, I never put myself in a situation where there could be a potential threat? I spent a few days musing on this, wondering if it was my state of preparedness that prevented potential danger. Preparedness is not only about safety, it is about thinking through a situation and doing everything that you can do in advance so as to be ready for any outcome. You see this with finely tuned athletes as they prepare for competition; actors prior to the opening night of a play; great musician’s who fine-tune their performance before a concert. I also saw this in Peter recently, as he was preparing for an interview. A consummate professional, he spent time reviewing his material and familiarizing himself with the interviewer in order to leave no room for surprises. When the interview happened, it went flawlessly for Peter and the journalist, both of them prepared and both of them ready for the interaction that took place. This sense of readiness can also be applied to our health. By knowing ourselves and our predispositions to certain illnesses as well as our physical and constitutional strengths, we can take the early, preemptive steps necessary to maintain maximum health. This is done by eating well and properly for our types, by supporting our selves with nutritional supplementation that is appropriate and targeted for what we are dealing with, and through alleviating stress, exercising and cultivating joy in our lives. Some days doing all this is easy…and on others, when there’s too many work or family demands, we find that the day is over and we haven’t exercised, or we grabbed a bite on the run, or put out our vitamins in the morning and never had the chance to take them. On these days, we are the beneficiaries of all the hard work we’ve done before. We are in a state of physical preparedness, and so we can handle short-term stress, changes in our schedules or changes in our diets due to outside circumstances. We also know enough so we can take the extra steps to recover! I like to think of our new product, Genoma Security, as one of these extra steps. It is a combination of five well-researched herbal ingredients, and it is a “work horse” product, designed to support a balanced immune response. It is also effective as a companion product with others in specific situations – for respiratory support, it is combined with Quercetin Plus; for candida/yeast overgrowth support, it is used in conjunction with Fucus Plus and Intrinsa; for inflammation support, it is paired with Phloxicin. It has numerous uses, and you can read more about it at: http://www.4yourtype.com/herbs_biofilm.asp In martial art’s terms, Genoma Security is “extra protection.” It is one of those products that provide assistance when there are stresses that compromise our normal state of health and well being. I have been pleased with my own results, and I am thrilled that we now have it available for you. Happy spring. Martha |

Eric Morrison, MIfHI |

|
Eric Morrison is both an IfHI Master
and a long time devotee to eating right for his type. You may be familiar
with Eric from the Right For Your Type Forums – he’s frequently on the boards dispensing helpful information to “newbies” and veterans alike. His desire to spread the word about eating right for your type led him to create a website www.battleforhealth.com, that is devoted to teaching people about The Blood Type Diets, and a DVD, “The Blood Type Diet Explained,” that has been endorsed by Dr. D’Adamo and can be purchased through his website. Eric will be teaching alongside Dr. D’Adamo and Larry Nesbit at the IfHI Certification and Conference in Nashville, Tennessee in April (http://www.dadamo.com/ifhi/2010spring.htm).
Eric was kind enough to share his inspiring journey into blood type and his own personal battle for health with us. Eric had been a sickly child, enduring repeated doctor visits to manage asthma and taking medication that helped keep the asthma under control, but left him with an increasingly weak stomach. Eric recalls one of his earliest memories of being in the hospital. “I thought I was going to die. I learned quickly that being sick was no fun.“ Aside from the vomiting and stomach aches, he suffered from recurring ear infections, common colds, intestinal cramping, chronic headaches, and an over reactive immune system which had him receiving frequent inoculations of synthetic cortisol from the general practitioner by the time he was 18. “If my physical ailments weren’t enough, I also suffered from increased irritability and ‘Type A’ personality, with mild bouts of depression that seemed to come and go. I was a fairly easy person to get along with, but I definitely had my own internal struggles.” As he matured into adulthood, Eric was asked to serve a full-time mission for his church in Mexico. “When young men in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints turn 19, they are expected to leave home for two years in the service of their church and God.” Eric explains, “This is a great experience that teaches these high school graduates about the difficulties and satisfactions in life via hard work, obedience, and service to others. Unfortunately, nutrition is not placed in high priority and medical care is scary to say the least. I contracted parasites one week, amoebas another week, food poisoning on several occasions, and diarrhea during my free time. Not to leave any empty spaces, I also had gas throughout the two years-- kind of like the mortar to keep the bricks of bowel disturbances from going anywhere.” Eric says that one night he woke up with the most horrible pain I had ever experienced, leaving incapacitated for the next few hours. “With my upper GI tract in the grass and my lower GI tract in the commode, I was ready to start the day on the right foot. Except I began my morning with a sinus infection unlike any other sinus infection.” The following day, Eric saw the local doctor in our small shoe-making village of Ticúl, Yucatán, who put him on a heavy dose of antibiotics. “This sounded like a great idea... and why shouldn’t it have? It killed the infection and it was cheap, taking care of my two biggest concerns at the time. What I didn’t know then was that antibiotics screw up your immune system because they slaughter ALL the bacteria in your system, leaving the yeast and ultimately bad bacteria to overpopulate the colon if you don’t eat well. Which I didn’t. So the rest of my mission I spent dealing with monthly colds and infections, constipation, fatigue, and horrible gastric indigestion.“ After arriving back home in the US, Eric went to the local health food store to try to find some answers to his digestive problems. “I thumbed through a white hard-covered book with black and red lettering whose title read, Eat Right for Your Type written by Dr. Peter, D’Adamo. ‘Interesting,’ I thought to myself. Four blood types, four diets…sounds logical. I wonder what it says about Type O.” When he read the section on Type O, Eric says he sensed something profound. “One of the first things I noticed was that wheat was an avoid for O’s. Meaning that it acts like poison in the body. Dr. D’Adamo was the first person I’ve ever heard acknowledge that.“ Eric immediately began to follow the diet and soon learned that he was a non-secretor, which helped him to refine his diet further. He says that the biggest surprise was that the diet was helping him to feel better in ways he never expected. He says he woke up clear headed and ready to start the day. He could breathe better and didn’t feel achy and sluggish. Three years later, Eric says he is in the best shape of his life and no longer suffers from any health problems. “More importantly, I have gained a whole new depth of expression – Vitamin E, as Dr. D’Adamo says. I feel happy to be alive.” Eric has become passionate about Dr. D’Adamo’s work and has made a personal commitment to spreading the knowledge. He has achieved the level of IfHI Master and plans to attend naturopathic school in the future. “Food is your investment, and your return measures far beyond any fiscal value. You can live, or you can LIVE. I thank God that I have been set free.” |
