In experiments, elderberry actually does inhibit replication of all strains of human influenza (both A and B) viruses tested.
Elderberry is an ancient remedy to beat the influenza virus, but does it work? In experiments, elderberry actually does inhibit replication of all strains of human influenza (both A and B) viruses tested.
In an actual placebo-controlled, double blind study (the scientific gold-standard so to speak) an extract of elderberry fruit has been shown to be effective for treating influenza B. What this research showed was that people using the elderberry extract got better much quicker (more than 70% were better after 2 days and over 90% of people completely resolved the infection within 3 days). In contrast, the people given a placebo often needed as much as 6 days to feel well.
Why does elderberry work? Well, the researchers found two reasons really. People taking the elderberry were able to produce higher anti-haemagglutination titers to influenza B (meaning their immune system essentially performed better and they now have a higher level of recognition should this "flu" return). And, elderberry inhibits neuraminidase (yes, that is the same neuraminidase that scientists are spending millions of dollars designing drugs against).
An important question that has not been answered yet is...will elderberry work as well against influenza A strains? I don't have a definitive answer for you on this yet, but based upon its method of action, its in vitro ability, and my clinical observations, the answer is probably yes. Our patients taking the elderberry, blueberry, cherry and apple concentrate mixture, seemed to pass easily through this past "flu" season.
The one word of caution I leave you with is that when it comes to daily use of elderberry, more is not always better. Large doses will lead to nausea. If you are trying to avoid a "flu" a small amount daily might help. I recommend elderberry especially for type B's and AB's because of their general susceptibility to the virus. For treatment we use 2 tablespoons 3-4 times daily for adults and less for children depending upon their body weight.
So, the final key point is...next "flu" season remember your friendly elderberry!

I am always so moved by the level of dedication and commitment people have to their well-being. It serves as a constant reminder that taking care of ourselves involves a daily vigilance as well as developing an extended community from which we draw support and strength.
I am always so moved by the level of dedication and commitment people have
to their well-being. It serves as a constant reminder that taking care of
ourselves involves a daily vigilance as well as developing an extended community
from which we draw support and strength. The NY GenoType group is a great
example of this extended community, and I had the opportunity to attend
one of their gatherings in mid-September. Started by Sharon Lewinter-Gleiberman
and Barbara Lewinter, the group meets monthly, shares information, has guest
speakers and provides a supportive environment for each individual to deepen
their experience of their own individuality. We had a great time together,
and I brought products and information to share. I gave them a sneak
preview of Carob
Extract, our new – and very tasty! – carob syrup. We looked
funny as we were all licking carob off of the wooden stirring sticks at
Barnes and Noble in Union Square!
Here’s a picture of the group that is comprised of truly remarkable people.
I can’t thank them enough for all that they do and for sharing their time with
me.
The NAP community is growing, as October brings the addition of Dr. Ryan Partovi,
who will be the Scientific Advisor for the company as well as a first year resident
physician at the Center for Personalized Medicine/University of Bridgeport School
of Naturopathic Medicine. Ryan is uniquely suited for this role as he has been
a student of Peter’s since the very first IfHI in 2003. At that time, he was
in medical school, and after the conference, he transferred to Southwest College
of Naturopathic Medicine.
Ryan graduated in July, and he will be working with
us to develop technical reference pieces on our products and conduct trainings
for clinicians on how to integrate SWAMI into their practices. He will also be
doing research for Peter. Ryan willl be a great addition to the staff, and we
are looking forward to having him here.

College of Naturopathic Medicine
I’ve always found October to be an invigorating month. There’s a crispness in the air that is refreshing, although I must admit I don’t enjoy the shortening of the days! There’s an abundance of fresh foods at the farmers’ markets, and I find myself searching for new soup recipes to try out. A recipe I love is for butternut squash soup. It’s
quick and easy, particularly in the slow cooker!
Butternut Squash Soup
1 pound of diced butternut squash
1/2 sweet onion, chopped
2 inches of fresh ginger, chopped
4 cups of organic chicken or vegetable broth (blood type appropriate)
1/8 tablespoon nutmeg (blood type appropriate)
Salt and pepper to taste
In a large frying pan, sauté the onion until it is soft. Add in the ginger, cinnamon and nutmeg, and continue cooking for 5 minutes. Place the squash in the slow cooker. Add the onion/spice mixture, 4 cups of broth, and salt and pepper. Cook on high for 3 hours. Allow to cool, and then puree in a food processor or with a blender.
Enjoy,
Martha

Recipe for a Strong Immune System
Ann Quasarano
Your immune system, when working properly,
has a remarkable ability to fight off the flu and colds.
As the autumn days become cool and crisp, it reminds us that we need to step up our immune boosting protocol and get our bodies into “fight mode.” Soon cold and flu season will be upon us and by taking a few preventive measures we will reduce our chances of catching those nasty winter bugs.
We all know that immunity begins in our gut. By eating foods that are right for your type, you are taking the most important step to staying healthy. Step up your consumption of beneficial foods and remove any avoids from your diet.
Stress lowers immunity. We can’t completely avoid stress, but take a few moments to slow down – find 10 minutes a day to just sit and close your eyes, do some deep breathing or meditation.
Exercise boosts immunity! Find an exercise that is right for you and stick with it. I love going for a brisk walk in the cool fall evenings as the sun is setting, it’s a great way to wind down the day and enjoy the beauty of the season.
Avoid refined sugars and saturated fats. Although you may be eating right for your type, sometimes these find a way of sneaking into our diet – be vigilant.
Follow good cough/sneeze etiquette. Wash your hands frequently, and avoid
touching your face.
Your immune system, when working properly, has a remarkable ability to fight off the flu and colds. Even if an infection does gain a foothold, it’s usually just a matter of time before your immune system mounts an effective counter attack!
Practitioner Spotlight: Andrea Chicurel
Correa
Ann Quasarano
You just have to know your blood type and
some measurements and you can change your life. Every day, I thank
God for the day I had the book in my hands, and of course, Dr D`Adamo
who wrote it.
Andrea Chicurel Correa, MIfHI runs
a nutrition clinic in Santiago, Chile where she recommends nutritional
protocols recommended in the Eat Right 4 Your Type and the GenoType Diet.
Following is a Q&A with Andrea about her background and work with
Dr. D’Adamo’s personalized nutritional programs.
Q: What is your educational background?
A: I have a degree in Biochemistry (Molecular Biology) from Catholic University
in Chile. I also did some work towards a Masters degree in Nutrition at the same
University. I am proud to be certified as a Master of the Institute of Human
Individuality.
Q: How did you learn about Dr. D’Adamo’s work? What did you
think about it when you first heard his theories?
A: I always wanted to be a medical doctor, but I had several health problems
and traditional medicine and drugs didn´t work. In my country, it is not
possible to study naturopathy, so I decided to learn the basic science in biochemistry
while I made several changes in my diet to find a path to better health. When
I finished my biochemist career, I thought, science is good but I want something
more practical. I studied and I used several diets, but they did not always work
and not with everyone. After 16 years learning different things, I was looking
for another book and I found, "Eat right 4 Your Type" and I bought
it. As I started reading it, I discovered that it was the missing piece of the
big puzzle. I started to use it in some people and it worked! I went to IfHI
seminars in 2007 and 2009 and it makes the difference. I learn a lot and I use
it every day with all my patients.
Q: When did you set up your practice? What types of patients do you see
(chronic illness, weight loss, etc.)?
A: With the BTD I started in 2006 and all the patients came by word-of-mouth.
Most of them come to lose weight, but others came looking for a new point of
view to their health problems. I have a clinic where I have four nutritionists
that work with me, and we have a little lab where we do the secretor tests. Now
we see more than 200 new patients each month!
Q: How do your patients react when you explain the concept to them, and
are they excited when they have results? Can you give an example?
A: Because most of our patients come by word-of-mouth, they know that the GenoType
Diet works from others. Some patients do not like what we say, but most do. And
I don´t say that this is magic and I have all the answers, but we tell
them to try it for a while. When they change their diets, they feel the difference,
and nobody can tell them that it is wrong.
We have some fantastic stories!
A 36 years old man that came to lose weight but he had severe gout. He tried
to lose weight with the traditional information, namely without red meat, sea
foods and all the foods with high uric acid. Twice, he tried to diet with classical
nutritionists and doctors but had to end after 10 days having a gout attack
in which he had used more than 20 colchicine pills to stop the pain. When he
came to our clinic, we discovered that he is a Hunter. I recommended that he
stop consuming the offending foods, but without introducing red meat for the
moment, rather just poultry and fish. After 2 weeks I called him, because I didn´t
have any calls from him and I was very afraid of the results and his health.
He was great and still now, afer 2 years he is very good, eating red meat, sea
foods, and he lost 33 pounds!
A 27 year old woman came to have some nutritional counseling because she heard
about the relation between nutrition and fertility. She spent 7 years trying
to get pregnant without success. She was on a weight loss diet eating meats and
salads, no carbs and a lot of dairy. When I evaluated her, I found that she needs
to be vegetarian (type A) and I told her to change her diet. She was very grateful,
because she liked being vegetarian and she didn´t want to eat meat. Subsequently,
she became pregnant the next month and now she has two beautiful boys.
A 30 year old woman came to lose weight. She was obese - weighting 241 pounds.
When I evaluated I discovered that she tried to eat less to survive and she is
a Gatherer! She began to eat the right foods and she lost 60 fat pounds.
We have more than 5000 success stories.
Q: Why do you like using the GenoType/Blood Type in your practice?
A: Because of the results, of course. I been using the GenoType diet for 18 months
and I am still learning. To me, it is the most amazing information in nutrition
that I ever learned. One interesting thing is that Dr. D'Adamo is teaching
something that science is still studying - I hope it will be the future in medicine.
You just have to know your blood type and some measurements and you can change
your life. Every day, I thank God for the day I had the book in my hands, and
