New Year's Thoughts and Wishes
Peter D'Adamo, ND

January is traditionally the month of new beginnings. However, it is also a time to take stock; to enhance and rediscover those innate blessings with which we begin the New Year.

If I had to pick three improvement goals for the New Year, they'd be:
  1. Health: We often take our health and physical well being for granted until we don't have it, and then we recognize how important it is. These are the times when we should be taking extra care of ourselves to make sure that we have health reserves to draw upon during challenging times. Nothing robs us of our health more than stress and any measures you can take to reduce the amount of stress in your life will be effort well taken. Slow down and take the time required to quiet your mind. These are simple measures that don't cost you anything and which can yield substantial results, whether it is weight loss, improved vitality or inner strength.

  2. Self expression: Each one of us has come into the world with our own particular uniqueness from how we look, to how we think, to how we are designed on a cellular level. Use this year as an opportunity to know and express your own uniqueness. Develop a new hobby or cultivate new interests. Expression is the one ineffable force of the Universe; the energy that gives tiny shoots the confidence to sprout out of cracks in the sidewalk. Make sure that you get your daily dose of ‘Vitamin E.’

  3. Love and Service: We all need love in its various forms, whether it is love of another, love of life, love of self. Cultivating love and a generous spirit will not only make you feel better, it will make the lives of others more enriching and fulfilling. When we are loved, we also have the capacity to share this with other, whether it is through the simple act of holding a door, lending a hand to another in need, or sharing our resources in whatever form this takes.

January is a time many people recommit to a more wholesome lifestyle and better health practices. Remember, a goal is a dream with a deadline. Successful planning involves writing your goals down along with all the steps involved with reaching them. Many people also find that establishing a “goal buddy” is a good way to stay on track. And then be vigilant with assessing your progress! Acknowledge the progress you make or where you get stuck. And don’t be afraid to re-evaluate and reassess your goals so that they stay relevant to what is happening in your life.

Success is usually not dependent on luck. It is a reflection of hard work and dedication. This holds true for weight loss, healthy living, career success and personal success. With January being traditionally the month of new beginnings, use this month as a time to set some goals for yourself and put in place a plan that helps you achieve them!

By the way, I’ve just completed a complete redesign of my main website (www.dadamo.com) and added a variety of new features, media and tools. Feel free to stop by and visit when you get the chance. Until next time

Natural Products in Detail: Weight Loss Resolutions
Natalie Colicci, ND

January is a month which, for many, represents a time to reflect on the past and resolve to improving oneself in the New Year. The New Year is most notably known as a time for resolutions; a tradition that historians say dates back to ancient Rome, 153 B.C.E. It is said that a mythical king who had two faces could look back on past events and forward to the future. Standing at the head of the Roman calendar, he was looked upon as a symbol of resolution.
One of the most popular resolutions in this day and age is betterment of health through diet and exercise to promote healthy weight loss.

This month NAP brings you additional savings on the Healthy Weight Loss Pack featuring four synergistic products that work with the dietary and exercise suggestions Dr. Peter D’Adamo outlines in his Healthy Weight Loss Program. These products help assist your body to restore balance and seek its natural, healthy weight. We also have specials on individual products, Deflect O, Deflect A, Deflect AB, Deflect B, Glycosia and Histona, that promote healthy weight loss.

Each pack is designed specifically for you blood type and ships with a helpful Weight Loss Program brochure outlining the daily program to get you started.

Dr. D'Adamo's revolutionary Deflect minimizes lectin damage from the avoid foods you eat, and repairs existing lectin damage. In the November issue, we discussed lectins - sugar binding proteins that among a tremendous number of physiological actions such as promoting bad bacteria overgrowth and inflammation, can promote insulin resistance leading to metabolic syndrome and diabetic tendencies because of their abilities to mimic a hormone called insulin! Insulin is an important hormone in the body responsible for the uptake of glucose into cells for the purpose of energy making. Under normal physiological conditions, insulin would be removed from cellular receptors when necessary. However, lectins can not be removed by normal mechanisms and continue to stimulate the uptake of glucose with allows excess glucose to be store as fat. As if that wasn’t bad enough, lectins can lead to impairment in digestion and an increase in appetite by blocking the release of a hormone called cholecystokinin! The individualized Deflect products provide sacrificial sugars which help spare your cells as lectin targets.

Glycosia - There are four major points that come to mind when I think of managing blood sugar levels: the cardiovascular system, insulin sensitivity, kidney function, and damage to tissue and nerves by excessive blood glucose levels. Addressing all of these, Dr. D'Adamo selected three well-researched botanicals from the traditional texts of China, India, and Japan, and blended them with nature's foundational flavonoid Quercetin and the potent nutraceutical Resveratrol to create Glycosia, offering next-generation blood sugar support. Salacia oblonga is an Ayurvedic herb which plays an important role in supporting natural carbohydrate metabolism and in maintaining healthy cholesterol levels. Salacia oblonga supports the body’s ability in regulating blood sugar by slowing the break down of carbohydrates into absorbable sugars which ultimately lead to spikes in glucose after meals. Doing so helps to support healthy insulin levels. Much research shows, that like the its fellow ingredient Quercetin, Salacia oblonga shows inhibitory activity on Aldose Reductase which is related to such chronic diabetic complications as peripheral neuropathy, retinopathy, and cataracts.

Resveratrol, an active component in red wine, provides cardiovascular support. It is a potent antioxidant and has shown in research studies to have cholesterol lower effects and increases levels of good cholesterol HDL.

Salvia miltiorrhiza has been added for antioxidant support and circulatory health. Used traditionally in Chinese medicine, recent research in the West confirms Salvia's importance for supporting cardiovascular health and kidney function.

Lastly, and probably one of the most highly research mushrooms for its health related effects, is Maitake. Maitake improves cholesterol levels and helps improve insulin sensitivity.

Histona - What better way to wake up your metabolism than talking directing to your cells - Histona supports healthy metabolism on the cellular level through one of its main ingredients, Coleus forskohlii. The major active constituent of Coleus forskohlii is a called forskolin. The most well known function of forskolin is its ability to enhance cellular energy mechanisms, similar to placing a fresh battery in your cells. This increase in cellular energy has a number of physiological actions in the body. By supporting healthy increases in the basal metabolic rate and hormone signaling, it supports healthy thyroid function and the breakdown of fat tissue for even more energy. Along with healthy diet and exercise, this herb can even promote healthy metabolism!

Eat Right on a Budget: Tips to Help You Watch Your Waistline and Your Bottom Line
Ann Quasarano

The downturn in the economy has affected everyone and we are all looking for ways to spend less and get more value from our dollar. It’s important, however, not to overlook your greatest asset – your health.

Investing in your health is the only sure bet you can make these days! One of the best ways to protect your health is through good nutrition and maintaining a healthy weight. Both the Blood Type and GenoType diets are balanced, whole food approaches to healthy living. To build muscle and lose fat, you need a variety of blood type friendly foods: proteins to build and maintain and build muscle, carbs for energy, fruits and vegetables for vitamins, minerals and fiber, water for hydration and recovery and healthy fats to help fat loss.

Unfortunately, the rising prices of food can make it hard to eat healthy – your paycheck is not likely rising as fast! We’ve put together some tips to help you stay on the healthy path that you’ve chosen and stick to your budget.

Buy whole foods.
Unprocessed foods are less expensive and more nutritious than processed foods. They also give you total control over the ingredients and help you to avoid diet busters like high fructose corn syrup, artificial colors and preservatives.

Buy seasonal fruits and vegetables.
Local farmers markets are a fantastic place to seek out fresh locally grown produce. If you don’t have a farmer’s market near you, check out the specials at your supermarket, seasonal produce is frequently on sale and less expensive than goods that need to be shipped in from afar. Check www.localharvest.org for a farm or market near you!

Stick to the Dirty Dozen.
If you can’t afford to buy all organic produce, then focus on purchasing the organic versions of the “dirty dozen.” The U.S. Department of Agriculture found that even after washing, some fruits and vegetables consistently carry much higher levels of pesticide residue than others. Based on an analysis of more than 100,000 U.S. government pesticide test results, researchers at the Environmental Working Group developed the “dirty dozen” fruits and vegetables that they say you should always buy organic because their conventionally grown counterparts tend to be laden with pesticides. The “dirty dozen” include: peaches, apples, bell peppers, celery, nectarines, strawberries, cherries, lettuce, imported grapes, spinach and potatoes.

Buy in bulk and split it with a buddy – or join a food co-op.
Many foods are less expensive when you buy in bulk – plus, you often get free shipping if you order on line!

Prepare your own food.
Preparing your own food gives you total control over the ingredients and it’s less expensive than buying food when you are out. Cook what you need for the next day in the evening or on the weekends – it also saves you from stressing about what you’ll be eating and you can eat healthy and still save money.

Avoid impulse buying.
Make a list and stick to it. Plan your meals ahead, including portion size. List all the foods and ingredients you will need for the next week, go to the store and get what’s on your list – ONLY what’s on your list - then get out of the store.

Grow your own food.
If you don’t have room to create an entire garden, grow vegetables in containers - beans, tomatoes, peppers and other veggies grow well in pots. Lots of herbs grow wonderfully in window boxes and look beautiful too. If you don’t have a yard, some cities rent garden plots for a nominal fee.

Get the customer card at your grocery store.

Many large grocery stores offer a customer card that entitles you to discounts and free items. In most cases, the card is free.

D'Adamo Genoma Skin Care Gets Glowing Reviews

Last spring, Dr. D'Adamo launched his skin care collection, D'Adamo Genoma, with our first product, Day Light Skin Creme. Since then the creme has been flying off our shelves! Why? Because it works! Based on our wonderful feedback, Dr. D'Adamo has expanded the collection to include a night creme, a cleanser and a toner ? a complete skin care system! All our skin care products are carefully blended with all natural, wild-crafted and organic botanicals. They contain no mineral oil, parabens, paraffin or petroleum, which research shows can be disruptive to hormonal activity. D'Adamo Genoma is formulated to be right for all skin types ? most skin care products contain irritants for one or more blood groups.

Here's what some satisfied customers had to say:

Male/Age 36

“I just wanted to promote the skin lotion. I’ve used it on my face and it seems like it makes your face feel pretty clean and soft. Not that I care about soft and all that, but I do like a clear complexion – and it seems to be working out well. My wife has had problems with different skin care systems. The last one we tried seemed to make her face break out. She is raving about this skin lotion saying it feels great and she is not breaking out.”

Female/Age 52

“I think I’m addicted to the smell of this lotion! I used to dread sticking to any kind of routine, let alone be compliant with something twice a day, but now I look forward to washing my face morning and night just so I can put on my Genoma face crème. Also, I’ve always had excessively oily skin, especially in the ‘T-zone’, but my skin feels less oily with the use of this product. I also have to mention that because of the hot climate I live in, I typically avoid using other lotions (even ones made for oily skin) because they seem to slide right off my face as soon as I step outside or start perspiring. With the Genoma lotion, this is not the case. My makeup is still intact well into the afternoon and my face does not feel slimy when I start to sweat. Maybe the other lotions were just sitting on top of my skin and not being absorbed.”

Female/Age 55

“I recently bought the crème and love it! I’m 55 and still break out. The Genoma is wonderful. It helps keep my face soft yet free from breakouts. My hat is off to you Dr. D for making such a wonderful product.”

Female/Age 50

“Love, love, love the Genoma Day Light Face Crème. I am 50 and my friends have remarked that I have reversed some of the aged look on my face -my lines are less deep and there is less dullness - with the Genoma Day Light Face Crème. I live in a very dry climate (7200 feet in the mountains) and there is no fooling the climate here. Either a product works, or it does not. My skin is the softest that it has ever been.”

Female/Age 31

“The Genoma lotion is great! A little of this lotion goes a long way!”
