Dr. D'Adamo's Letter:
Peter D'Adamo, ND

Long renowned in Traditional Chinese Medicine (where it has been used since 100 AD) Magnolia is considered a safe treatment for low energy, anxiety, stress and depression.

For me, June has always been a time of endings and beginnings. Children eagerly await the end of school –though not usually the final examinations that go with it! Gardeners are usually out doing pruning and turning over planting beds, anticipating that bumper crop in the fall. Cyclists like me are out on the trails, thankful for the cool breezes.

June is also a time of new beginnings for North American Pharmacal. I’ve just redesigned the website and added tons of new content. The Supplement Determinator has been updated with new product details and awaits an opportunity to be of service. In May NAP launched ShareRight, a customer referral program that rewards both the purchaser and the referrer with discounts for simply using and recommending NAP products. We’ve trimmed our email list (thanks for opting in!) and hope to provide more helpful and timely updates in the future.

June is also about the time when the Magnolia blossoms fall from the tree, so what better time to talk about what is quite possibly my favorite botanical agent and the product focus of this issue.

Long renowned in Traditional Chinese Medicine (where it has been used since 100 AD) Magnolia is considered a safe treatment for low energy, anxiety, stress and depression. Magnolia has two interesting anti-oxidant compounds, magnolol and honokiol, which are thought to be responsible for its amazing biological effects. NAP makes a unique Magnolia complex called ‘Histona’ which combines this amazing herb with synergists Coleus forskolin and Salvia sage root.

Honokiol and magnolol are thought to give Magnolia its anti-stress benefit due to their cortisol-busting abilities. Elevated cortisol levels are linked to obesity, diabetes, osteoporosis, poor memory and compromised immunity.

The latest research news reports that breath mints made with magnolia bark extract kill most oral bacteria that cause bad breath and tooth decay within 30 minutes of chewing the mints!

On top of everything else, Magnolia seems to have a unique way of ‘talking’ to cancer cells, sort of convincing them to commit ‘hari-kari’ –a type of programmed cell death scientists call apoptosis. This cancer-suicide function is best seen in lymphoma and leukemia. Magnolia also seems to help prevent cancer cells from becoming resistant to chemotherapy, which if proven, may be of earth-shattering importance. Finally, Magnolia is well researched as a wonderful anti-inflammatory herb. If you’re stressed out, seeing that mid abdominal belly fat slowing increasing, or just don’t jump out of bed in the morning like you used to, Magnolia may be the herb for you.

Until next time, stay well, and maybe I'll see you under the Magnolia tree.

Peter

Natural Products in Detail: Histona™
Natalie Colicci, ND

Histona contains three synergistic ingredients: Coleus forskohlii, Magnolia officinale, and Saliva miltiorrhiza. First introduced in 2007, after being designed specifically for use in his clinic, Dr. D’Adamo formulated Histona to support healthy heart function, normal blood pressure, and to promote healthy cellular communication.

Coleus forskohlii

An ancient herb, it has a long history of use as a staple in Ayurvedic medicine for heart and lung disorders, intestinal spasms, insomnia and convulsions. The major active constituent of Coleus forskohlii is a called forskolin. The most well known function of forskolin is its ability to enhance cellular energy mechanisms, similar to placing a fresh battery in your cells. This increase in cellular energy has a number of physiological actions in the body. By supporting healthy increases in the basal metabolic rate and hormone signaling, it supports healthy thyroid function and the breakdown of fat tissue for even more energy.

By increasing this specific means of cellular energy, Coleus forskohlii affects the amount of calcium availability in platelets, decreasing degranulation and aggregation, or clumping together. This same calcium modulating mechanism accounts for its ability to effect the release of histamine involved in common allergies, as well as relax arteries and other smooth muscle.

Coleus forskohlii ability to balance natural cellular energy mechanisms makes it a great pick for use in individuals with skin conditions like psoriasis. In psoriasis, skins cells replicate too rapidly and do not mature; Coleus forskohlii promotes healthy cell replication and maturation.

Along with healthy diet and exercise, this herb can even promote healthy metabolism!

Salvia (Red Sage)

Salvia miltiorrhiza, also known as Dan Shen, is one of the most versatile Chinese herbal drugs that has been used for hundred of years in the treatment of numerous ailments. It improves the circulation, and protects against the platelets sticking together. Salvia also has a calming effect on the body.

Magnolia

The use of Magnolia in Traditional Chinese Medicine is ancient. Magnolia’s various parts have a multitude of actions on the body. The flower bud is used orally for sinusitis and head cold, as well as headaches and skin conditions. The bark, as used in Histona, is effective for digestive disorders, constipation, inflammation, depression, anxiety, stress, asthma, smooth muscle relaxant, stroke, and even dental caries! A versatile herb in its own right, it has been most studied in the past few decades for its anti-platelet effects, preventing adhesion and aggregation.

Studies have shown that magnolol, a chemical constituent of Magnolia Bark, prevents atherosclerotic disease by preventing damage to blood vessels by decreasing the oxidation of bad LDL cholesterol through its antioxidant effects. Honokoil, also a chemical constituent of Magnolia Bark, was found to inhibit blood clots through anti-inflammatory mechanisms leading to increased cardiovascular protection.

A study comparing Magnolia Bark and a leading pharmaceutical used in the treatment of high cholesterol (lovostatin) showed that Magnolia decreased plasma lipids and free-radical stress on the artery walls. In addition, Magnolia Bark was actually shown to decrease the gene expression involved with manufacturering high levels of cholesterol. No wonder Dr. D'Adamo loves this stuff!

Making the Decision to Transition from Blood Type to GenoType
Ann Quasarano

If you’ve made the decision to transition from the Blood Type Diet to the GenoType Diet here are some tips to get you started.

Blood Type or GenoType? It can be confusing – which is right for me? Dr. D’Adamo has come through for us once again! He’s created a simple questionnaire to help you to determine what’s right for you. There are sixteen “yes or no” questions – you just click on the appropriate button - it does all the calculations for you and points you in the right direction. Click here to go to the questionnaire:

If you’ve made the decision to transition from the Blood Type Diet to the GenoType Diet here are some tips to get you started:

For the first three months, try to choose Super Foods exclusively. If you are trying to lose weight, try to concentrate on the foods with the diamond symbol next to them. This three month period is crucial to detoxify your body and “re-set” your genes. At first, this may seem difficult – but here’s a little trick that might help – get a pack of index cards and write the Super Foods from each group on the index card. Separate your cards into piles for each food group (red meat, poultry, vegetables, fruits, grains, etc…), use your cards to create meals for each day, write them down and create a shopping list. Not only will you have the week’s meals planned ahead, but you will have your shopping list ready to go. If going cold-turkey is too difficult for you, try to eliminate one toxin per week from your diet and add in as many Super Foods as possible, it may take a little longer to make the transition, but at least you are headed in the right direction.

After the first three months, you can begin to re-introduce the foods in the “Toxins to Limit or Avoid” column that are indicated with a black dot. These should be treated as occasional neutrals. Of course, if you feel that you are starting to battle an illness, or begin putting on weight, you might want to go back to avoiding these foods for awhile.

Foods that are unlisted should not be considered good or bad, they are essentially neutral. The nutrients in them will benefit you, but they won’t specifically help you to restore balance to your genes or health to your cells.

The best part about this lifestyle is that it really does work – in addition to countless stories of weight loss (see our Spotlight on NAP employee Nancy Kuhn who lost 40 pounds!), we have had reports from people who say that their allergies have cleared up; “GTD has healed me of my wheat and dairy allergies!” exclaimed one Nomad. Another Gatherer said that her seafood allergies were resolved after six month on the GenoType Diet.

As Dr. D’Adamo says, “Change your attitude, change your gene function.” Yes, it really is that simple. “If you look at it as the power to control your own genes – the power to become the best YOU that you can be - the opportunity is limitless.” And perhaps the easiest way to decide which diet system is right for you is again to listen to the words of the man himself:

"The Blood Type Diet aligns the person to the genes."
"The GenoType Diet aligns the genes to the person."

Norwalk Natural Foods
Newsletter Spotlight

Rick Ringel stands next
to his NAP shelf at
Norwalk Natural Foods.

Norwalk Natural Foods: a well known source for health foods and supplements.

Rick Ringel has been in the natural health business for almost as long as he can remember. 'It's all I've ever done. My mom had a health food store in Queens, NY that opened in 1961. Eventually my dad joined her and both my brother and I followed her into the business. It's all in the family!' In 1990, Rick purchased his own store, Norwalk Natural Foods, an existing health food store in Norwalk, Connecticut. It was one of the few health food stores in the area and had been operating for almost 50 years when Rick purchased the shop. Located in a commercial shopping and dining district, Norwalk Natural Foods was a well known source for health foods and supplements.

Rick's had first hand experience with the changes in the natural foods business since the '90's. When he bought the store, it had two main sections; one half was dedicated to foods and the other side was devoted to supplements. 'Back then, the giant retailers, like Whole Foods, didn't exist.' A few years ago, two large markets dedicated to health foods opened about a mile away from his store and he found that he could not compete with their food selection. He says that he now carries very little food, focusing instead on supplements and providing outstanding customer service to his clientele. 'I can provide services they can't, like filling special orders that the chains just can't do.'

Another change he's noticed is that people are far more interested and educated about their health. 'People seem to know what they want!' Rick says. He keeps up with the nutrition industry and reads the trade journals to hone his knowledge of vitamins and nutritional supplements. 'I avoid the internet' he jokes, 'Sometimes people come in saying, I read on-line that so-and-so cures this disease or that illness and it's just not the case.'

Rick began his relationship with North American Pharmacal about two years ago. 'North American Pharmacal's offices were located around the corner from my shop' says Rick. 'The employees became customers of mine and we started talking.' Intrigued by Dr. D'Adamo's philosophy, Rick began to stock the Right for Your Type products. Although NAP has moved to Wilton, Connecticut, they still maintain the same great relationship they had when they were neighbors. Today, Norwalk Natural Foods carries the complete line of Dr. D'Adamo's RIGHT 4 YOUR TYPE products, including all the test kits (blood type, secretor, GenoType), Sip Right Teas, Protein Blends and several of Dr. D'Adamo's books.

Rick clearly puts his customers first -- providing the highest quality products and excellent customer service. At this rate, it looks like he'll be in business for the next 50 years!

Nancy Kuhn
Newsletter Success Story

She’s Not Just an Employee…
She’s A GenoType Dieter!

NAP Customer Service Team Leader, Nancy Kuhn was one of the first people to get a glimpse of The GenoType Diet. “I received a rough draft of the manuscript in October – what a thrill! I’m a Nomad; I wasn’t surprised. The term “Nomad” had frequently been used throughout the blood type books to describe blood type B, so it came naturally to me. I just happened to be one of those Nomads with red hair and green eyes, so everything seemed to fit me to a tee.”

Nancy said she had tried other diets, but it wasn’t until began eating right for her type that the weight came off – and stayed off – but she credits The GenoType Diet with her real weight loss success. Nancy has been following the GenoType diet since October and has lost 40 pounds just by following the dietary recommendations for Nomads. “It was an easy transition,” she says, “This book taught me so much about myself and went way beyond blood type. It gave me insight into things I could never quite put my finger on – all became so clear.” When asked about what other changes she’s experienced, she remarked that her health, energy and overall vitality have vastly improved. Nancy’s exercise program includes Yoga, which Dr. D’Adamo recommends for Nomads. She is also an avid gardener which she finds very calming and meditative. “I love growing flowers – it’s so amazing. There is no technology in my garden, no computers, no e-mail, no ringing cell phones. It’s a great escape.”
Her diet consists of what she refers to as her “Diamond Foods” – those super foods listed in The GenoType Diet that promote weight loss. Coincidentally, these are some of her favorite foods! When asked which foods she misses that she can no longer have, her reply was simple, “Milk.” She keeps her calcium intake high by using the Right for Your Type line of vitamins and minerals “I never go with out them, they are absolutely amazing – there is nothing like these formulas anywhere else.”

Nancy has been encouraging her friends and family to switch over to the Blood Type and GenoType lifestyle, “Slowly but surely.” she says “I’m getting the whole gang on the plan. They love it too.” She enjoys being an advocate for Dr. D’Adamo’s work and spreading the word. “I’m looking forward to the whole world waking up one of these days and saying…wow…the truth was right in front of us the whole time!”
